This is one of those questions that is so completely "it DEPENDS..." that I can't even begin to answer it.

It would be completely hypocritical to say "porn collection" given that I have many many volumes of ::feminist porn magazine:: openly displayed on my bookshelf and coffeetable. But if I went round a dude's house and they had "anal fuckfest babes volumes 1 through 8" on their video shelves I would be totally skeeved out. It's about presentation and power and how these things code differently in different contexts. I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with porn, but a person's taste in porn says a fuck of a lot more about them and how they are going to treat me as a woman than their music collection does.

As for a religious display, it would depend on the religion and the friend. My Mum is a priest, so I'm used to having a lot of religious paraphernalia around the house which would probably disturb someone who hadn't grown up around the church. I've known lots of people of many different religions that had religious displays in their houses and it's absolutely fine. That said, there are specific displays of specifically Christian paraphernalia that make me way way more nervous than even "anal fuckfest babes volume 42" because they also speak to holding deeply RONG views about women and sexuality etc. etc. etc. Actually quite similar to the porn thing but in a different way.

Why am I even typing on this thread? You know how you start typing a considered response on a thread and about halfway through, you just start thinking "why am I even bothering to do this?" and give up and hit the back button without submitting? I seem to be doing that more and more on ILX. I should probably do it on this thread, too, but I'm going to hit submit post and feel weird about it the rest of the day instead.
