A black man invented the cotton gin (Posted in the African-American Forum)

Eli Whitney was a slave who spent many hours picking cotton by hand when one day he came up with an idea and he invented the cotton gin. Here is an example of a black man who used his brain and came up with something the world could use. When someone tells you black men are worthless just mention someone like Eli Whitney and that will shut them up.

It was in 1793 that Eli Whitney, a black inventor, created the cotton gin; a device used to multiply cotton

Blacks suffered for freedom. Cultural contributions that added to the fabric of America, that ALL can enjoy, including a Jimi Hendrix guitar, Tupac lyrics, Muhammad Ali’s boxing rope and Charlotte Bobcat’s owner Michael Jordan’s sports memorabilia, shows the progression of African Americans in America on to the successes like Eli Whitney, Garrett Morgan and President Obama.

Smith agreed that some black inventors aren't as well known because they did not have a way to promote themselves or their inventions, but that they were important nonetheless.

"It needs to be told that the things that were happening and done weren't publicized because we had no outlet to let people know what was going on," he said.

Smith spoke of Dr. Charles Drew, who revolutionized the preservation and storage of blood plasma, as well as Eli Whitney, who invented the cotton gin. Smith also spoke of other inventions by black inventors, such as Garrett Augustus Morgan, who patented the traffic light in 1923.

"How important that is for us to get around," he said.

It is Black History Month

the amount of play George Washington Carver and Eli Whitney get in American history books is kinda weird.

Some of the African Americans celebrated during black history month include inventors like Eli Whitney, Martin Luther King Jr., and Harriet Tubman.

I have a simple question for everybody.

Do any of you realize that it’s STILL black history month??

Just thought I’d remind everybody because I keep forgetting. After I left public schools where it was mandated that they mention black folks at least thrice daily, well, after the first week, Black History Month becomes somewhat of an afterthought. I mean shit I guess we do kind of get tired about hearing that George Washington Carver invented the cotton gin, and that Eli Whitney invented the retractable dome, or even that Martin Luther King led the Nation of Islam with the help of W.E.B. DuBois and Booker T. Washington. And who can forget about Madame C.J. Walker creating the first post-it note with Crispus Attucks and Bobby Seale.

And if I have to hear one more time about Huey Newton creating his Fig Newton’s I just might scream.

I mean, I already KNOW all that.

Now that we have a Black President I have heard rumblings that some feel Black History Month is no longer necessary.

Growing up Black History Month simply meant we would hear the “I Have A Dream Speech,” in school and talk about Fredrick Douglas, Pierre Toussaint L’Ouverture, Nat Turner, Eli Whitney, Langston Hughes, Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth and the guy who invented the stop light and gas mask.( To this day I can’t remember his name.) Once this obligation was filled we went right back to studying a very colorless history.

I bet you probably didn't know that the traffic light was invented by a black man. Or that a black discovered the North Pole. Or that Sears was actually "Sears and Roebuck", Roebuck was black man. The "Cotton Gin" was also invented by a black man, "Ely Whitney".
