Someone has uploaded all 13 hours of the BBCs 1992 general election coverage to Youtube and I've wasted most of today watching it.

Watching the 97 election coverage on youtube is weird because there are a fair number of people appearing who are still on TV/in the papers fairly regularly, but everyone is noticeably thinner/less haggard/less bald etc, it looks sort of like a movie based on the current news that has cast actors who are better looking than the people they're playing.

I've just noticed that I mistyped the title, it should read 'Thread for photos and discussion of British MPs from days gone by'

Is there anyone on ilx that knows about poetry who can tell me if Enoch Powell's poems are any good? I don't feel knowledgeable enough about poetry to tell if the poems are good or not.

XLVIII) Sharp rises on the cloudless blueSharp rises on the cloudless blueThe knife-edge of the hills,And boundless sunlight clear and trueThe vale beneath them fills.As clear as light, sharp as a knifeA truth springs in my breast:There are but two things, death and life,And death of these is best.

XLVI) To J.R. H.Master, whose blinded sightIs eager still;Master, whose love of lightAge cannot kill;Time was that I would prayTo have for mineAfter as fair a daySunset like thine.But every passing yearThat turned a pageHas taught me how to fearA barren age,And now I seek to dieLong, long ere then,And being dead to lieWith the young men.
Master, whose blinded sightIs eager still;Master, whose love of lightAge cannot kill;Time was that I would prayTo have for mineAfter as fair a daySunset like thine.
But every passing yearThat turned a pageHas taught me how to fearA barren age,And now I seek to dieLong, long ere then,And being dead to lieWith the young men.

XLVII) Oh sweet it is to see the skyOh sweet it is to see the skyBehind the yellow gorse,And sweet it is to hear the cryOf swallows in their course,And sweet upon the windy leaTo shout and leap and run;But this were sweeter far to me,Neither to feel nor move nor beNor ever see the sun.
Oh sweet it is to see the skyBehind the yellow gorse,And sweet it is to hear the cryOf swallows in their course,And sweet upon the windy leaTo shout and leap and run;
But this were sweeter far to me,Neither to feel nor move nor beNor ever see the sun.
There's a weird, quasi fascistic glamorisation of (obsession with) death in a lot of this stuff.

Is there any readable armchair psychoanalysis of Powell available anywhere?Most of the stuff written about him seems to be by fanboys, I've read Paul Foot's penguin book about him, but that isn't really concerned with what made him tick.

Has anyone read any of Chris Mullin's collected diaries? The 2005-2010 collection has some interesting accounts of Parliamentary Labour Party meetings and anecdotes other people tell him, but Mullin's own opinions and observations tend to be quite dull/banal, I thought?

If anyone has an opinion re. the 'are Enoch Powell's poems are any good?' question above I'd be interested to hear it.

Being nice is not always an advantage. Sometimes that is the envy godsend challenge, especially if it is linked with the knowledge and intelligence.
