The Answers (per the 2000 Census, as listed in my 2002 World Almanac*)

A: Austin, TX - 656,562
B: Baltimore, MD - 651,154
C: Chicago, IL - 2,896,016
D: Dallas TX - 1,188, 580
E: El Paso, TX - 563,662
F: Fort Worth, TX - 534,694
G: Greensboro, NC - 223,891
H: Houston, TX - 1,953,631
I: Indianapolis, IN - 791,926
J: Jacksonville, FL - 735,617
K: Kansas City, MO - 441,545
L: Los Angeles, CA - 3,695,820
M: Memphis, TN - 650,100
N: New York, NY - 8,008,278
O: Oklahoma City, OK - 506,132
P: Philadelphia, PA - 1,517,550
Q: Quincy, MA - 88,025
R: Raleigh, NC - 276,093
S: San Diego, CA - 1,223,400
T: Tucson, AZ - 486,699
U: either Upland, CA - 68,393 or Upper Darby Township, PA - 81, 821*
V: Virginia Beach, VA - 425,257
W: Washington DC - 572,059
X: Xenia, OH - 24,164 (the only X of 5,000 or more)
Y: Yonkers, NY - 196,086
Z: Zanesville, OH - 25,586

*ok, here's the confusion with U. My Almanac says Upland, CA is the largest "Place of 5,000 or More" in the U.S. that begins with a U. The Almanac does not list Upper Darby Township, PA among such places, although a number of other PA townships are listed, and it purports to list places incorporated as towns under the laws of the respective States. The homepage of Upper Darby Township says that it became incorporated upon separation from Darby Township in 1736 and is currently incorporated as a First Class Township under the PA Home Rule Charter, and has a population per the 2000 census of 81,821. I don't know how to interpret this - does the census treat it as part of another place (Philadelphia, presumably) or did the World Almanac mistakenly omit it?

(also, I wrote the above backwards in part - it doesn't matter how the census treats Upper Darby (and clearly it measures its population as a place), the Almanac looks to State-level recognition, so it seems the Almanac screwed up unless I'm missing something)

one month passes...
I think the menus are full of too much information for people of a certain age (i.e our parents)

This is one of the reasons my parents have started going to buffets -- the food's all right there in front of them and they can take a little of everything and not have to make any "choices" (another reason being that my mom's diabetic/Atkins and she can load up on vegetables and meat and not be stuck with a plate full of carbs she can't eat).

-- stockholm cindy (jod...), March 25th, 2004 4:56 PM. (later)

It is reasonable to be confused by menus, because menu writers are not typically members of any cultural elite themselves. "Pie with chips and peas or salad"? It's a goddamn trick question. Use commas, pricks.

It is reasonable to be confused by menus, because menu writers are not typically members of any cultural elite themselves. "Pie with chips and peas or salad"? It's a goddamn trick question. Use commas, pricks.

I've hardly ever had that happen, and if it has I've usually been able to figure it out from context -- with this example I'm pretty sure "peas or salad" is the variable.

-- stockholm cindy (jod...), March 25th, 2004 5:08 PM. (later)

WRONG!

-- Eyeball Kicks (eyeball_kick...), March 25th, 2004 5:09 PM. (later)

Pie, (with (chips and peas) or (salad))

-- mark grout (mark.grou...), March 25th, 2004 5:10 PM. (later)

I prefer it when people speak for themselves only or not at all and don't bother me when I'm eating or thinking about what I'd like to eat or working out what I can eat or where I am.

-- RJG (r_gillander...), March 25th, 2004 5:10 PM. (later)

Most menus don't just say "salad" if it's a main dish -- they say "dinner salad" or "arugula salad with etc etc." If it's an appetizer or side dish, that's when you see "salad."

-- stockholm cindy (jod...), March 25th, 2004 5:11 PM. (later)

CONTEXT IS EVERYTHING DOOFUSES

-- stockholm cindy (jod...), March 25th, 2004 5:12 PM. (later)

are you calling yourself a doofus?

-- RJG (r_gillander...), March 25th, 2004 5:12 PM. (later)

wtf is "chips and peas"?

-- stockholm cindy (jod...), March 25th, 2004 5:12 PM. (later)

exactly.

-- RJG (r_gillander...), March 25th, 2004 5:13 PM. (later)

whoever orders pie with chips and peas or salad deserves whatever he gets.

-- stockholm cindy (jod...), March 25th, 2004 5:14 PM. (later)

Clever point.

-- Eyeball Kicks (eyeball_kick...), March 25th, 2004 5:16 PM. (later)

the point is that that HARDLY EVER HAPPENS and if it does just fucking stop making everyone's life miserable and order something that does make sense!

-- stockholm cindy (jod...), March 25th, 2004 5:17 PM. (later)

Maybe the slowcoaches are doing a close-reading of the menu. It's admirable.

-- Eyeball Kicks (eyeball_kick...), March 25th, 2004 5:21 PM. (later)

yeah, just cuz you don't care WHAT THE FUCK you're putting in your mouth.

-- RJG (r_gillander...), March 25th, 2004 5:22 PM. (later)

i think the idea is to choose between "chips and peas" and salad.. i.e. "pie with chips and peas" or "pie with salad".

You don't actually order "pie with chips and peas or salad", cos that's dumb. And yes, if you ordered that you deserve whatever you get.

-- ken c (pykachu10...), March 25th, 2004 5:22 PM. (later)

yeah, just cuz you don't care WHAT THE FUCK you're putting in your mouth.

you're saying this to me?

-- stockholm cindy (jod...), March 25th, 2004 5:24 PM. (later)

where are you, now?????

-- RJG (r_gillander...), March 25th, 2004 5:24 PM. (later)

what?

-- stockholm aja (jod...), March 25th, 2004 5:26 PM. (later)

I would like some pie.

-- Archel (dilettant...), March 25th, 2004 5:27 PM. (later)

Pie, (with (chips and peas) or (salad))

mark grout is OTM. More menus need to be written in either LISP or SCHEME because I can't follow the turgid English that's written for the idiots.

Then again I don't go to those kinds of restaurants.

-- Elvis Telecom (chri...), March 25th, 2004 5:28 PM. (later)

Maybe all restaurants should serve food right out of the can, Repo Man style.

-- Ned Raggett (ne...), March 25th, 2004 5:29 PM. (later)

my public service announcement for the day: under no circumstances should anyone order pie (with anything) at the turkish-run cafe by the tesco's in the stroud green road. lord god, is it nasty.

-- lauren (jaguarrid...), March 25th, 2004 5:32 PM. (later)

(order '(pie (or (and chips peas) salad)))

-- Dan Perry (djperr...), March 25th, 2004 6:00 PM. (later)

Can I just have a roll?

-- Ned Raggett (ne...), March 25th, 2004 6:47 PM. (later)

(order 'roll)

-- Dan Perry (djperr...), March 25th, 2004 6:49 PM. (later)
