A health visitor will measure the circumference of a babies head and its length using a normal tape measure to ensure the baby is growing. If you go to a baby health clinic the baby will also be weighed. If the visitor is coming to your home their purpose is mainly to see how the mother is coping, is breastfeeding going okay? Is everything normal? Is the baby jaundiced?

A doctor should have thouroughly checked out bubs before you left the hospital. They check lots of things eyes, ears, mouth and palate, reflexes, hips etc. Things a new mum will be interested in are: how often is bubs feeding? is he attaching to the breast properly? how many dirty and wet nappies does the baby do?

As babies age different markers of their social and emotional development will be checked. Simple things like how comfortable the baby is with its Mum, whether its smiling, etc.
