Books are expensive to publish - especially if you're doing art books or something like that. DVDs are relatively cheap to make.
I just used my brother's wholesale distributor and got Samuel Fuller's Shock Corridor and The Naked Kiss, and Godard's Contempt and Band of Outsiders for about $20 apiece, which is what I'd pay for a mainstream film.
