i'm lamestream but No Country For Old Men

fuiud, mac (rip van wanko), Saturday, 9 December 2017 23:55 (eight years ago)

it's a little try-hard, faux deep, not believable, but still gets me every time

fuiud, mac (rip van wanko), Saturday, 9 December 2017 23:59 (eight years ago)

Kubrick's The Killers is a good one.

The James Woods movie Cop (based on a James Elroy novel) is mostly forgettable but has an incredible ending.

omar little, Sunday, 10 December 2017 00:46 (eight years ago)

Agree on NCFOM!

omar little, Sunday, 10 December 2017 00:46 (eight years ago)

Just watched Profession: Reporter and that definitely qualifies.

Just watched Profession: Reporter and that definitely qualifies.

For Americans, that's The Passenger.

and Josh, it's The Killing.

here to do my duty and say the third man but also

notorious
a serious man
perfume: the story of a murderer
double indemnity (don't much like this movie; LOVE "closer than that, walter")
the godfather's good, always love a wipe.

difficult listening hour, Sunday, 10 December 2017 02:49 (eight years ago)

and if morbs is listing every kubrick movie then fuck it, jack in the photograph IS deep

difficult listening hour, Sunday, 10 December 2017 02:57 (eight years ago)

I have a soft spot for endings that literalize the movie's title, a la There Will Be Blood and Drag Me To Hell.

Oiled Launch (Old Lunch), Sunday, 10 December 2017 03:08 (eight years ago)

and Josh, it's The Killing.

It is! I blame the phone. The Killers is the Burt Lancaster noir with two different versions, right?

The Conversation and Godfather II are both pretty great. The Searchers ... lots of great endings!

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 10 December 2017 03:40 (eight years ago)

The Bicycle Thief

jmm, Sunday, 10 December 2017 03:55 (eight years ago)

The Vanishing is definitely the one I think about the most

sciatica, Sunday, 10 December 2017 04:02 (eight years ago)

I love the ending of I Am Love, (not the mid-credits slow-motion shot of the two-of-them in the grotto), but when Tilda is seen stalking across the grounds through the window in the background, and bursts in the door, and then runs upstairs and the housekeeper is throwing clothes on the bed, and then bawling, and then Tilda's wearing something vaguely frumpy, and then she locks eyes with her secret lesbian daughter, and they clutch their hearts, and the camera runs out to where Tilda was standing a second before and turns and looks out the front door but she's gone

vertigo is one of old lunch's if you assume his acrophobia was cured in the middle of the movie but has just come back

difficult listening hour, Sunday, 10 December 2017 04:07 (eight years ago)

xp Oh yeah and Harmonielehre blasting through the whole thing it's just great

flamboyant goon tie included, Sunday, 10 December 2017 04:11 (eight years ago)

Agree about I Am Love!

Kubrick is kind of his own category here, but my choice in that category is Eyes Wide Shut, although the last shot of Barry Lyndon is great.

As for recent movies, the last few scenes of The Lost City of Z are gorgeous.

ryan, Sunday, 10 December 2017 04:16 (eight years ago)

I love the ending gag of Sherlock Jr, Buster looking to the screen for cues on what to do in a final scene

Colonel Blimp, the military band getting louder and louder

jmm, Sunday, 10 December 2017 04:21 (eight years ago)

The Third Man ftw.

I feel like I should say The Florida Project just for trolling, but instead I'll say the one that The Florida Project keeps reminding me of, which is Corneliu Porumboiu's The Treasure. Anyone seen that?

Frederik B, Sunday, 10 December 2017 12:23 (eight years ago)

The Vanishing is definitely the one I think about the most

oh god yeah, absolutely haunting

maybe pushing the definition of ‘final scene’ a little but fuck it - the giant’s superman-inspired self-sacrifice at the end of the iron giant makes me ugly-sob every single time

It seems unfair to say Stalker as that movie has the best everything else, just about, but Stalker

imago, Sunday, 10 December 2017 13:49 (eight years ago)

And if we're shamelessly boosting our faves, best Bunuel closing scene is IMPOSSIBLE. Maybe slightly favour Fernando Rey going for the fridge

imago, Sunday, 10 December 2017 13:52 (eight years ago)

Okay, bizarro, you've convinced me to finally give in to my sister's entreaties and watch Iron Giant over the holidays. Had no idea Donald Sutherland was even in it.

Oiled Launch (Old Lunch), Sunday, 10 December 2017 13:54 (eight years ago)

And and the end of C&JGB. All the best films have the best endings. It's not fair. Will have to think of crap films with great endings now. Pierrot Le Fou is a good film with s great ending maybe

imago, Sunday, 10 December 2017 13:54 (eight years ago)

The jerry Lewis film that ends with the set being dismantled

I think a lot of my favorite movies have something closer to a final movement (not quite an act) or series of scenes--rather than a discrete "final scene." 2001 is probably the paradigm for this.

Lukas Moodysson has a knack for endings

Fucking Åmal / Show Me Love ends with two girls, out of the closet in love for the first time, drinking chocolate milk together and giggling

my all time favorite final scene / shot is Synecdoche, New York. it’s not even close. Was speechless & in a daze for an hour afterward. Shares something v important with the ending of Personal Shopper, a choice I’m surprised more filmmakers don’t use.

First thought is The Third Man, but on second thought the goodbye to all that optimistic Americanism is a bit tired for my personal taste.

Wilder's endings are pretty, pretty good.
