Science Fiction/Double Feature

The song Science Fiction/Double Feature from Rocky Horror Picture Show references a number of old sci-fi/horror flicks. I think I've seen a 3 or 4 of these, but mostly decades ago (with the exception of Forbidden Planet, which I had on VHS as a child and still watch a few times a decade). I've made it my goal to try to catch up with all of them this month. I watched Invisible Man last night and it was great. Which of the others should I be most excited about?

All of them.

Night of the Demon is excellent. That’s where Kate Bush’s “IT’S COMING, IT’S IN THE TREES!” from Hounds of Love comes from. Keep in mind when watching it that the director never wanted to show the monster and the monster is the least impressive part of the movie. Drag Me To Hell borrows a lot from Night of the Demon.

The Day of the Triffids is probably the worst film. And I prefer Them! to Tarantula when it comes to giant insect movies. The rest are all p great.

Triffids is probably the closest to a MST fun/junky movie on the list. For some reason I was really into it when I was in 3rd grade or so.

It's still great though! Agree that "Triffids" is pretty dull.

The Day The Earth Stood Still is enjoyable - great cinematography - though yes the main thrust of it is bullshit "earthlings stop being warlike or we will KILL you for it".

King Kong's final line is the kind of thing that sounds great but it too is bullshit. Think it's pretty clearly your greed that killed the beast here dude.

Doctor X has Humphrey Bogart as a mad scientist.

Forbidden Planet a five star film and certainly the greatest example of the kind of US 50's sci-fi the song is an ode to, though things like Invisible Man, Night Of The Demon belong to other traditions.

Dr Morbius' disdain for Leslie Nielsen on these boards used to always amuse me because having seen FP I knew those two had history.

The Day the Earth Stood Still -- talky and preachy but still effective; they had a decent budget and it looks great

Flash Gordon (1936 - serial) -- all 13 chapters would be too much for most adults, but it's certainly worth sampling; especially entertaining for those interested in George Lucas' childhood

The Invisible Man (1933) -- the one on this list I'd most like to see again right now

King Kong (1933) -- problematic as fuck but a classic on many levels, an essential film

It Came From Outer Space (1953) -- it's no Thing from Another World but still worth seeing

Doctor X (1932) -- crazy pre-Code horror in bizarre-looking two-color Technicolor; Lionel Atwill and Fay Wray are good but for me the picture is ruined by Lee Tracy's comic-relief male lead

Forbidden Planet (1956) -- classic ofc

Tarantula! (1955) -- underrated giant arachnoid picture with Leo G. Carroll getting his face melted; watch for the Clint Eastwood bit part at the end

The Day of the Triffids (1962) -- meh, I liked the book better

Night of the Demon (1957) -- my favorite of these, also the only movie in the list that isn't remotely science fiction

When Worlds Collide (1951) -- again, not as good as the book(s)

Boring vote for King Kong.

Lots of good films here but It Came From Outer Space is based on a script by Ray Bradbury so gets my vote just for that. There's one little part where a maintenance worker gives a speech about how spooky the desert is that's pure Bradbury. The rest of his dialogue seems to have been excised!
