Indian films on TCM

Turner Classic Movies is the greatest thing to happen to television in the United States, ever. As further confirmation of this, they are putting on a Bollywood film series, the selection for which is really thoughtful:

I don't get TCM (*cries*) but those who do, or have friends who do, should tape some of these films as a few aren't easily available on video, and besides TCM very often shows films in transfers that are better in quality than the existing videos.

Slutsky, can't you just drag a long cable wire from across the border, maybe from somewhere in New Hampshire?

The problem with this fucking province I live in is there's ridiculous bureaucratic impediments to selling/renting videos and DVDs. Any video product sold or rented in Quebec needs a little sticker of approval from the Régie, which costs money and takes time etc etc. It's incredibly frustrating.

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, and this isn't country-related, I can't afford any kind of cable at all, so that's that for that.

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I love that although AMC (American Movie Classics) has gone completely down the shitter, no one really much cares since TCM has taken up the slack and then some. Although unfortunately TCM doesn't come in as many cable packages as ACM--yet. I get free cable along with free HBO, but I don't watch it much. If I had TCM I'd probably quit my job and sit on my couch all day.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 30 May 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

That's what I did, and I don't even have cable!

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

(by the way, do those stations have that annoying black bar at the bottom like other Turner stations I've seen?)

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, they just add a scene to every movie where the principals do a little jig to the TCM theme tune.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 30 May 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, yes, yes, totally true. TCM is the best TV channel. Ever. I'd like to think of TCM as being Ted Turner's apology for being an advocate of the colorization of b/w movies. (You just want to shake these people, and scream out, "You just...don't...get it!!"). When TCM does an actor or director retrospective, MY GOD, they do a retrospective.

And what did happen to AMC? It seems like overnight, they went from wonderful to crappy (oh, memories of their Hitchcock marathons...)

Ernest P. (ernestp), Saturday, 31 May 2003 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

They stay on too late! I'll never make it halfway through Bombay.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Thursday, 5 June 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to like TCM, but there's this theory that he's just making it badass to annihilate AMC, and then when they're finally gone he'll whip out the crayons. You've been warned.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 6 June 2003 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Turner actually isn't directly involved in TCM's programming, also word has it that he is a fan. But TCM's parent company thankfully sees TCM not as a money-maker but as a prestige asset. Thus they're free to program whatever they want (and the programming is wonderful) as long as they don't actually *lose* money, which so far they definitely haven't.

Rock on TCM.

one month passes...
OMG this was posted during my Ilxhiatus, but one of you should have still emailed me to let me know you were going to be threading this topic!

So...what did ya'll think? I've seen most of these before, and didn't re-catch all of them during the broadcasts as I was busy, but I was indescribably excited about this event, and pretty pleased w/ the selections. Which made up for the fact that the inarticulate-and-inaccurate-as-ever Ismail Merchant was co-hosting. Pakeezah and Pyaasa are some of my fav films of all time, but I've never been mich for ranking (cn't say if it's "top 5" or "top 50" when it comes to films; don't know why, but I've always given into listmania when it comes to music, but not movies).

And yes, AMC is now complete and utter shite, but it's really a very funny joke if you care to see it that way. I mean, they've totally revamped their programming, they've slimmed out the selections from pre-1970, they've added the most inane choices to their schedulings -> but they think they've improved! Yes the THIRD Smokey and the Bandit film really is an American Movie CLASSIC that we're screening right after Young Guns tonite!! Stay tuned!!!! Never mind the fact that we've already aired Young Guns 17 times this month!!!! Movies for "Movie PEOPLE."

One of my friends dad works pretty high up in the industry, and he was so incensed last year when he realized AMC's altered its basic programming, that he called them up to ask whatever for and why. The response: "we're broadening things...reaching out to more people." Are their revenues so down since 2001 that they've been duped into thinking that these movies really will appeal to a wider demographic? It's just sad, cuz I remember as a teenager AMC used to be one of my fav channels. An escape into a mesmerizing, glamorous, black&white world, with the occasional forays into TechniColor.

Now my friend''s dad has started his own personal boycotting of AMC by ONLY watching TCM when he gets the urge to watch classics on cable. I'm very glad that I get TCM here in LA as well (since Amateurist is right about its limited availability -Adelphia didn't carry it in Pittsburgh); it satisfies a LOT of my classic Hollywood needs.
