That site is hard work. Anything with Jean Gabin in is well worth seeing - he is my favourite actor ever. Pepe Le Moko is tremendous.

yeah sorry abt that. I'll try and cut and paste chunks of the programme here a bit later on.

Purple Noon is definitely worth a see (it's based on the same novel as The Talented Mr. Ripley). Fantomas (a series of silent crime flicks from the twenties), as I've heard, is quite a bore, interesting only for the costumes and the athmosphere.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 4 July 2003 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Both the Truffaut films (Shoot the Pianist and Confidentially Yours), Pepe le Moko, Le Trou, and I'd still say see at least one or two Fantomas films and then decide if you want more.

Fantomas is from 1913-14, it was a five part serial. Looks as though two parts will be shown. I don't know how much sense they'll make since each episode very much ends as a "cliffhanger."

I think they are suspenseful and funny and thrilling and beautiful, not to mention atmospheric. The costumes aren't much, but the views of early 20th c. Paris are priceless. If you've heard of Les Vampires, it's the same director, Louis Feuillade. This was his first boffo international success. It spawned remakes (some authorized, some not) all over the world and Fantomas movies, TV shows, etc. in France through the present day.

I can't speak more highly of these films.

By the way Amateurist are you an Irma Vep fan?

s1utsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

(the movie not the lady)

s1utsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno. I saw it before I saw any Feuillade, and I remember having mixed feelings. I have to see it again.

I am a Maggie Cheung fan to be sure.

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

You should see it again. I'm a big fan. M. Cheung is really divine in it.
