Inagaki's Samurai Trilogy

Wow. Just marvelous. I can't believe how criminally overlooked Inagaki is outside of Japan. Don't get me wrong - Kurosawa's still the shit, so I don't wanna hear any "eh, it's okay but not as good as Yojimbo/Seven Samurai" crap.

I thought it was a little strange how suddenly the monk just drops out of the trilogy after the middle of the second film, never to return. And you never really get a sense of just who or what precisely Mifune is fighting for. But it makes up for all that in epic. Other minor things to trifle about - Mifune's friend from the beginning of part 1 just suddenly disappears more or less from the framework when his parents find him. Speaking of which, I wanted to see more of his mother - she did such a great job not only in the first part, but was also a favorite of mine from Good Morning.

That all being said, the fact that this was based on a real samurai just blows my mind. The final duel on the island at the very end = perfect scene.

Damn you people, I know someone has a comment. I'd just rather not repost this in ILE just to get it. Support ILF!

two years pass...
There's an upcoming samurai fest in NYC, and I've seen hardly any non-Kurosawa, so I'll get to "Samurai Saga." Any other recommendations?

See 'em all and let God sort out the rest.

The Samurai Trilogy rock. I haven't watched them in about three years, so perhaps this weekend I'll revisit them. Reminding me of the final duel gives me shivers.

ah ive seen the trilogy. got them off the ever-reliable a&am bt tracker a couple of months ago. i dont remember much except for the vivid colours and the flawed narration (as mentioned above; seemed typical of a literary adaptation)
