Wild Strawberries

I've just finished watching Ingmar Bergman's Wild Strawberries, and the same thing still bugs me as the first time I saw it. The scene where Professor Borg returns to his childhood home and begins to reminisce bothers me. Maybe I'm missing something, but none of those events (the strawberry patch, the dinner table) could really be his memories- he was never present when any of those things happened. They even mention how he was fishing with his father? So how does one recall certain events at which one was not present? I've looked over the scenes carefully to make sure I just wasn't looking at it wrong, but if I remember correctly, he specifically uses the term "memories"- not "dreams."

Memories are subjective.

Is it his own projection of what happened? Or that too perfect? Is it what he wants to believe?

I considered that, but based on his personality, the scenes would have worked out differently. There is a scene where his love interest is torn between choosing him or his cousin. In his mind, she would have, of course, chosen him, but in the film, she has trouble deciding. Also, we see a reaction shot of his face as the scene progresses, and he is troubled by what she says.

You assume that he has a normal propensity for embellishing things in his favor. Which would make sense assuming a third party to tell these things to. But I can state from my personal experiences that I tend to negatively embellish my memories of things I regret. So I don't think it's out of the question...

This all being said, I must out myself and say that I haven't seen WS in a while and can barely remember it.
