I suppose it's about time we had a board like this, so here it is. I have no idea how to do all the admin stuff, and it's pretty late, but to get started I suppose that, through some egalitarian method, we need to decide what this board is for. It has been suggested that we have some sort of forum dealing with the technical/theoretical aspects of film, which would be very worthwhile but perhaps a little exclusive. S+Ds, c/ds and the like should probably have a home on ILE as well as here, but this is what we make it...

On a slightly drier note, if anyone does know how to do all the administration for these boards, could they give me a primer or perhaps help out?

I leave you with a picture of the brothers Lumiere.

Nordicskillz, thanks for doing this.

slutsky (slutsky), Monday, 28 April 2003 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

No problem. I'm tired now. Going to sleep.

Nordic, we all kiss u. Hurrah

Vic (Vic), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah nice one Nordic, I think there's plenty enough film buffs, and myriad thread topics in this area, that this should work nicely.

Well done! :)

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Nordicskillz a question that just came up due to my faux-pas on the ILE Mods thread:

are you the only person here in charge of admin stuff? bcz if this board takes off the archiving/mod chores could get a bit unwieldy, no? not that it's a pressing matter yet but i thought you might want to put the call out for help before it gets to be.

(i can't volunteer myself yet, as my next few months' plans remain ridiculously up in the air)

and about archives: would it be presumptious to start a thread for category suggestions, or is that just silly at this point?

jones (actual), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd volunteer if you need the help, NS.

slutsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Nordicskillz, can you delete my new thread when you get the chance? Thank you.

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 08:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Amateurist-Done, but I thought you made some great points! Maybe a similar thread (albeit one you're more comfortable with) sometime soon?

As for archiving-yes, I want to get round to this, maybe on the weekend. Admin isn't too tricky at the moment, but slutsky - if the offer's still good, that would be great. I'll mail you offlist. I'm fine with doing this, although in early June my life will in all probability be plunged into chaos - I have no precedent for a Transatlantic move (!), but I can't imagine it will be all smooth sailing. There is also a question mark over whether I will have regular internet access until I find a home in California, which may not be until August, or even later.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 08:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, I was in the middle of posting a response to amateurist's thread when it vanished (well, more of a holding action than a response)... Hopefully it'll be resurrected after I've given it a proper think.

dave k, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 08:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops, sorry, dave k. It was a subject we should definitely attempt to breach very soon, so here's hoping... :)

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 08:37 (twenty-two years ago)

No sweat; I do love the image of amateurist burning that through his keyboards at 3 am (and hope he got some sleep)... argh; would like to dabble more but must prepare for a talk so as not to make a total ass of myself,

dave k, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Nordicskillz, would you like to empower me as a moderator? I have an itching to correct the spelling on some of the threads, for example Fredric Wiseman to Frederick Wiseman. I could also categorize. I wouldn't step in to delete or edit posts on request, however, as I'm not dependably near a computer much of the time.

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Amateurist, I think you were born to be a moderator! :)

Sure, I'll take a look...

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

You would def. be the best person here to categorize, if you think you have the time/inclination.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Just give the sign. Also, I think we should avoid a proliferation of "meta" threads--or hold it off for as long as possible--so perhaps we can keep moderator and other board issues on this thread for now? Including discussions of categories. I think the best thing to is for me to create a few straightforward categories (Directors, Actors, Silent Films, DV Production, Film Production, Videos/DVDs, etc.) and then see if anyone has suggestions or objections.

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, let's try to avoid meta threads as much as possible.

As for categories, I think yours are pretty good, though I'd suggest maybe a Technical Questions category (though these could easily fit into DV or film production etc).

slutsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I second that emotion.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

nordicskillz - if yr offer on the ILE Mods thread regarding this mess-up still stands, then yes please. i promise not to make a habit of this.

jones (actual), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Okey dokey.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, also, I was thinking a Film Festivals category might be useful, though there is already a thread; I imagine folks who attend fests at home & abroad might want to discuss what they've seen in the context of more festival-specific threads etc etc.

slutsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Definitely. It would be good to have a thread or two where people list festivals and local film organisations, etc. I was thinking we would have categories for different aspects of filmmaking, too (editing, camera, sound, writing, etc).

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, I don't mean to be a pedantic loser about this, but maybe DV Production should just be called Video Production or something like that, as DV is a specific format.

slutsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

(that was a cross-post, but I second Nordicskillz' emotion.)

(and lighting, let's not forget lighting.)

(but are we getting ahead of ourselves here?)

slutsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I think we need a category to house what will no doubt be many threads concerning the pitfalls of recoiling power cables.

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

And a "boom-in-the-shot" category.

slutsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Rain on lens / Boom in frame / All is ruin

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Save it for ILM!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, I think we are getting way ahead of ourselves.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

(And I'm the guilty party - forget my suggestion above, for the time being)

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

My madness has settled too. I think having simple production categories for Film & Video will suffice for now. Though we might want to also have categories for post stuff, like Online Editing etc. There, I'm going crazy again.

slutsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Rain on lens / Boom in frame / All is ruin

Ha! I just saw a post from slutsky on an ILM Smog thread - are all three of us fans? I don't know what this says about anything, but there's an explanation there somewhere...

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 1 May 2003 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

slutsky and amateurist, I'm going to post the odd admin-related topic here, so keep an eye out.

I've asked Mark S to make you both ILF moderators, could you check this by trying the "Administer Board" link at the top of the main ILF page, and entering your passwords?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 2 May 2003 09:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Unfortunately I don't see any such link at the main ILF page.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 2 May 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

me neither--well I don't see one now because I'm not at home and not logged in, but when I read your message this morning I tried as well--no dice.

s1utsky, Friday, 2 May 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

OK - I'll speak to Mark S again.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 2 May 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, it seems to be working now.

slutsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

It does? yay!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

l'ILF, c'est moi

slutsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

six months pass...
Looking over threads and two thoughts have occurred to me:

1) We really need some more categories, like one for films themselves, and maybe a S/D one, too.
2) Something like 75-80% of the threads are uncategorized.

Oh, and is Nordic (adam) still the mod? The only one? (I'm not saying there should be more than one, necessarily, just curious.)

Girolamo Savonarola, Sunday, 9 November 2003 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I am though I have never used my powers.

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 9 November 2003 02:00 (twenty-two years ago)

s1utsky and the absent amateurist are still the other mods. Anyone else that wants to help out can, of course.

I would also like to take this opportunity to ask people what they think ILF's place is, if it has any at all. It was kind of started with the intention that we would also talk filmmaking in order to attract a wider variety of people than simply those who read/post to the film threads on ILE, but it didn't really turn out this way. Tom Ewing (quite rightly) pointed out that there are very few threads on here that would be out of place on ILE, or that deserve to be an on external board. So, do we carry on regardless? If so, what can we do to distinguish this board? Or do we just pack it all in and go back to ILE where there is likely to be more interest/response? All of the regular posters here make a major contribution to most film threads on ILE, anyway. I realize that it is an organic entity, and we can't *make* it be anything it doesn't want to be, but I am curious...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 9 November 2003 04:51 (twenty-two years ago)

We can make it if we try.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Sunday, 9 November 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

ILF seems to be slowly snowballing (well, maybe I'm insane and that's what I'm hallucinating because that's what I'd like to see...), but it just seems like something in particular is lacking - and I don't think I was too far off in that the fact that so much is uncategorized seems to make the space seem unprofessional. Mind you, obviously this space is a bit more work than the average "Other" boards, but certainly it's not so much that it requires anything more than weekly attention? I'd definitely be willing to do my part to help in the meantime.

Girolamo Savonarola, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Does this mean we commence the moderator inauguration ceremony?. I'll get s1utsky - prepare to bare your left nipple and recite the oath...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

...Ah, it appears I need your login name to set you up- it is not accepting your handle. If you want, you can send it to me at laststandrecords at hotmail.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a sneaking suspicion Girolamo isn't even REGISTERED! IMPOSTOR!

s1utsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 07:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Next thing you'll be telling me that isn't even his real name!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

You mean I have to register and all that shi'ite? *grumble, grumble*

Very well. Give me a bit o' time and I'll get right back to ya.
