Decent books on cinematography?

I have the John Alton book, which is very good in parts, but I'd like to read something more recent on cinematography and/or camerawork. Any recommendations?

Vittorio Storaro - Writing with Light: Volume 1: The Light

Are you more interested in the study of cinematography (in which case, watch Visions of Light, a wonderful documentary on cinematography), or do you want a nuts-and-bolts how-to?

If you really want to learn how to become a cinematographer, I'd honestly say to start working on learning the basic principles of photography. The Ansel Adams books (The Camera, The Negative, and The Print) are particularly good for this, as you'll learn all the workings of this - and this doesn't vary too much from still to motion picture photography. The other thing you must do (obviously) is to constantly practice it. Start with stills with an SLR camera and maybe find a small 8mm/Super 8mm/16mm home camera that's a few decades old.

I have an old Super 8 camera and splicer, but I can't afford the stock at the moment. Hey, how about a Super 8 thread?

You can't afford the stock? Most places sell it for 9-15 bucks a cartridge.

I'd start a Super8 thread, btw, except that I'm even ghettoer. My only camera I'm working with at the moment is a standard 8mm (split 16). But by all means, do start it.

processing, that should be. I had a projector, but it broke, and it costs a fortune to transfer to DV.

Transfer != processing. Yeah, processing can be a bitch. However, you should be able to find a projector on the cheap. And doing a "telecine" by videotaping off the projection screen = classic underground style. Cool flicker. I'm dead serious, too.
