Name as many movies off the top of your head that are better than the book they're based on.

Sorry if this has been asked already, but I can't find it in the search.

"The Haunting of Hill House" (or was it just "The Haunting")

This topic was on ILE. FWIW, Thin Red Line the book was fairly bad.

Jaws, The Godfather, and Psycho are often mentioned when this topic comes up. I also like the recent adaptation of The Quiet American better than the book. They fleshed out the characters more, made them more than caricatures.

Jules and Jim
Silence of the Lambs
Breakfast at Tiffany's
The Shawshank Redemption

Girolamo Savonarola, Thursday, 28 August 2003 05:37 (twenty-two years ago)

To Live and Die In L.A. (coming out on DVD on 12/2, incidentally)
Fight Club
Bullitt (the novel Mute Witness)
Jaws of course

Has anybody here ever read McCabe by Edmund Naughton (which spawned McCabe & Mrs. Miller)? I've never seen a copy (did a search: it's out of print), but I imagine it would have to be REALLY great to beat the movie.

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Thursday, 11 September 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Animal Farm! Hey, happy ending! :)
