Making your own DVDs

This is one of my big projects right now. I've done some stuff with iDVD, but it's really rinky-dink, so now I'm trying to figure out DVD Studio Pro, which seems like a really excellent program.

Anyone have any experience with this? Any info on duplication etc? Feelings on MPEG-2 compression software? Design? etc?

Slutsky - Will post more on this 2moro!

I'm in the process of putting together an archival DVD with iDVD of all my old shit right now -- you're right, it is rinky dink. version 2 was more customizable than 3. Whattup with that? I guess they want people to move to Pro. Guess I'll go do that now...

I only have version 1. Which is very very bad, but it does the job for very basic under-60min discs.

I have done some encoding for DVD with Cleaner 5/6, which I think is a great program, but I've never actually done any authoring/design. I have DVD Studio Pro, but no burner yet, so I can't really use it. It is truly exciting in it's potential, though. From what I understand there is still a huge discrepancy between the DVDs you get from Blockbuster and the ones you can knock out with a Mac.

Quality-wise? Or what?

slutsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

(Hey slutsky!) No, more of a compatibilty issue, I hear. There is a small and unpredictable percentage of domestic DVD players that just won't play home-authored/burnt DVDs.

nancy's dad loaded up her new uber-pc with all these dvd production programs and yet and yet...no dvd burner.

Doh! They're getting very cheap now, though...

so I burned a copy of the DVD I've been woring on in iDVD... and it's a mess. text illegible ... overlapping titles... pixelated looking encoding in areas with shading gradation. Must get Studio Pro asap.

Yikes. Never seen that happen with my projects, but I still use crappy (and apparently reliable) old version 1. I haven't yet completed any projects with DVD Studio Pro so I'm withholding judgment.

What do you people know about DVD-Rs? I'm thinking of ordering several rare silent films in this format, but I'm not certain my DVD players can handle them. I have a Cyberhome CH-DVD 500 and a Sony DVP-S550D.

Wait: what platform are you running Chez Slutsky?

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 5 May 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Chez Slutsky, I use a Panasonic DVD player and it seems to play the DVD-Rs I've made fine. I know there are sometimes issues with these, but I've never had a problem. I'd take a chance on one if you want it particularly badly.

also: they're DVD-Rs, not DVD+Rs, right? because I believe -Rs are more universally compatible than +Rs.

slutsky (slutsky), Monday, 5 May 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

?

slutsky (slutsky), Monday, 5 May 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

What is a DVD+R?

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 5 May 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

It's another format (for another kind of DVD burner). I have no idea why there are more than one.

slutsky (slutsky), Monday, 5 May 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Capitalism.
