I say search The Maltese Falcon.

Search: The Third Man, Double Indemnity, Sunset Blvd, Touch of Evil, The Big Heat, DOA

destory: I don't know. I don't usually watch many classic movies that I don't like.

The original The Postman Always Rings Twice, the Big Sleep; not a noir, really, but for some reason I always throw The Thin Man in there...

Also search Detour.

Destroy: Night of the Iguana, if it qualifies as film noir.

I know High and Low is also described as film noir, but why why why? it's way more of a policier...

The Big Clock is no classic, and maybe not noir, but amusing suspense yarn; basis for No Way Out.

Touch of Evil is one of my fave films, so that's my pick.

Has anyone seen the 'restored' version? I'm seeing it with a friend at the NFT next week. It'd be interesting to hear comments on it. (Also keen to get the Region 1 DVD eventually.)

Double Indemnity is great - 'They've got more tricks than a car-full of monkeys'

another vote for 'kiss me deadly'.

they should a box set of film noir's on sale. anyone know of any good books on the genre?

"Film Noir" by Bruce Crowther is the only book I have on the genre - not particularly in-depth but it's a very good reference guide.
Search - The Sweet Smell Of Success, Build My Gallows High (aka Out Of The Past), The Set-Up, Night Of The Hunter.
Destroy - the remake of Night Of The Hunter starring Richard Chamberlain, Dead Again starring Kenneth Branagh (not that I've actually seen this one but how good can it be?)

"Dead Again" isn't as good as most of these mentioned movies, but it has a couple of strange twists. I thought it was pretty good at the time. It is like a Brian DePalma movie, if you can get over him showing off while aping another directors style, you can enjoy the movie.

I think some of the films which are heavily influenced/tributes to the originals are as or nearly as good like "Chinatown", "Body Heat", "The Grifters" & Altman's "The Long Goodbye".

The re-edit of "Touch of Evil" based upon Welles notes greatly improves an already good movie.
