Spirited Away and Japanese mythology

I've heard a lot of talk about how Spirited Away was inspired directly by assorted ye olde Japanese folktales and mythology but haven't been able to find much information on which exact myths Miyazaki uses in the film. Can anyone shed any light on this or provide any readings of the film which take Eastern mythology into account?

I'm not sure of any exact myths, but the whole idea of inanimate objects having spirits comes from eastern mythology.

FYI, I have read that this movie was inspired by Greek and western mythology, as well.

I heard it was inspired by the desire to have a worldwide smash hit so it used every mythology it could get its hands on.

(kidding, of course... I really liked it a lot myself, but don't know anything about which mythologies and which fantasias it was inspired by, other than Alice in Wonderland, of course.)
