The Brown Bunny

I don't know about anyone else, but I am dying to see this film. Any movie that's been this critically-panned is a must-see on my list. Which is why I also plan on being the first one in line at my local Blockbuster as soon as Gigli hits the shelves.

Everythin I've read about this film convinces me that it is likely to be incredible. American critics also panned Gummo. Many reviewers and audiences alike tend to be intolerant of features that utilize Avant-Garde structure and movies as a whole suffer because of it.
Gallo compared his film to a Robert Ryman painting. I don't know if you've seen Ryman's work but I can't describe the style and texture beyond saying that the sparse beauty of some of what I've seen is seriously breathtaking. I'm dying to see if Vincent Gallo can actually achieve the feel of a Ryman painting; that's the kind of ambition we should want in filmmakers. I just hope he lives up to his questionably ironic ego and isn't simply jerking off. I think The Brown Bunny is expected to be released some time in November.

Buffalo 66 rocked hard, so I have high hopes for The Brown Bunny.

True. I neglected to mention that Buffalo 66 did in fact rock. I saw it again late at night on cable last summer. Forgot how unique, surreal, yet oddly human the whole thing is. It also had one of the best movie trailers in recent memory.

ten months pass...
I didn't think B.B. was so bad. Sloppy update of Zabriskie Point. More thoughts here: http://entertainmentcomplex.blognation.us/blog/_archives/2004/8/28/131750.html

BB is more like Two-Lane Blacktop, or recent Kiarostami films, though certainly Antonioni is relevant.

It's a good film -- I saw it in Toronto last September -- but the, um, climactic fellatio scene, and even more the "revelatory" twist ending, sucks.

But at least it doesn't disappear up VG's asshole the way Buffalo 66 did after the dinner scene.

the twist ending - does it turn out that they were the monsters all along?

CAUTION: SPOILER

Chloe Sevigny is actually played by Roger Ebert. Now it all makes sense.

Heh...Ebert gives the re-edited version a "thumbs up." No kidding. Here's the review: http://www.suntimes.com/output/ebert1/wkp-news-bunny03f.html

...and here's an article he wrote about the "feud": http://www.suntimes.com/output/eb-feature/sho-sunday-gallo29.html

What a surprising turnaround. Ebert's review was quite reasonable. Dare one say, OTM? But few are the films that aren't improved with the elimination of 25 minutes.
