Bono and Harvey Weinstein team up for Academy dick-sucking queue?

Lost in Translation.

I bought into the hype, and loved the premise, but the movie was a huge letdown.

Out of all the movies nominated for Best Picture (taking it for granted that this is the primo element to set a person up for disappointment), Gangs of New York is the biggest disappointment?! It had its fair share of faults, I'll admit, but at least four out of the five Best Pic nominees from the previous year disappointed me even more (Moulin Rouge, Lord of the Rings One, A Beautiful Mind and especially In the Bedroom).

especially In the Bedroom

You so crazy!

I figured GONY would suck to start with - Cameron Diaz + Leo DiCaprio in big-budget period piece? Yikes.

Heaven = Kieslowski's script + Tykwer + Blanchett
It should've been waaay better than it was.

Going back aways....

The World According to Garp....I found it boring and, at times, offensive (like the women who cut their tongues out in protest)...some have suggested I read the book and then see it again....no thanks

My Private Idaho......I saw this puffed up in a film journal and excitedly dragged my wife to see it at some art theatre. I hated it more than her.

8-1/2 .....I tried it twice because it's on every damn critics best ever list....didn't do it for me and I'm not Fellini hater....for the type of movie it is, I prefer the critical failure, Woody's Stardust Memories.

The Fisher King....I didn't think it possible to make a movie I'd dislike with Williams and Bridges in it....it was. Since then, I've become more discriminating in what I'll go see with Robin. He has made more than a few stinkers in his career. I liked him in Moscow and Best of Times, more unassuming films.

Forest Gump .....some critics I respect loved it. I didn't.

Eight Men Out ....I consider myself a bit of a baseball historian (although I'm somewhat bored by today's version of the game)....this movie bored the crap out of me and I kept confusing the players with each other.....they never seemed to develop disernible characters although they WERE based on real life players. Hell, Field of Dreams did a better job and they flat out lied when they made Shoeless Joe seem like a well spoken matinee idol.

and, of course, I could go on....

8 1/2 is my favorite movie ever!

anyway, Minority Report was slighlty dissapointing for the final act (also since A.I. is also one of my favorite films)

ryan (ryan), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I was very looking forward to American Splendor, and found that very disappointing if only because I had unreasonably high expectations.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Dancer in the Dark is the first to spring to mind. Also, Irreversible, Lilya Forever, Princess Mononoke... Oh, and someone already said In the Bedroom, I agree with that. Note that none of these, except the first one, are bad films, it's just that I expected a lot more from them.

Ditto "Lost in Translation".

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I think most films that dissapoint are films that aren't bad, just frustratingly mediocre or centerless or something to that effect. I like "bad" movies more than "dissapointing" movies, personally.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

On the other hand, sometimes finding a film confounding (in a good way) is easily mistaken as dissapointment.

magnolia -- but much better on second viewing at home where you can drink and smoke and eat and take trips to the john (goes for most films, really)

Wax, or the Discovery of Television Among the Bees (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0105791/) - from the description, it sounded like the coolest thing ever, but it was far, far from that.

All the reviews for A Beautiful Mind were absolutely glowing, and I had high expectations...but when it was done, I felt robbed of my time. WHY?! Why did this movie win the "Best Picture" Oscar? It seemed to force its "oooh, this may or may not be real" cleverness, and Russell Crowe - sorry, but that accent didn't cut it. And when those college people laid out their pens on the table, that was just forced warmth - it was manipulative and made me feel ill. Most of the movie really rubbed me the wrong way.

Matrix: Revolutions because it barely makes use of "Belluci's perfect breasts nearly burst[ing] out and kill[ing] all nearby partiers."

one month passes...
Kill Bill, without a doubt

Echoing the Lost In Translation dissapointment upthread...

mostly for the Americans Connecting in Japan (which has happened to me, reluctant as I was about it)

I mean: Kevin Shields soundtrack, Scarlett Johansen, Sofia Coppola (coming off Virgin Suicides at least)... It looked great on paper.

Stylistically it has it's moments but my negative criticisms are detailed elsewhere at length.

Please tell me you saw A.I. in the first weekend, because after that it was all about the negative buzz. I thankfully waited until a month or two into its run and was blown away by how unexpectedly moving I thought the film was.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 9 January 2004 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

A.I. was great!
