Foul Play

I guess it'll have to be the Three Amigo's. I'm surprised to discover how many of his movies I've never heard of.

Caddyshack. Obvious.

Colin Saunders (csaunders), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i always kinda liked the christmas vacation movie. probably the LATEST chevy movie i would ever watch willingly.

'National Lampoon's European Vacation'. The richest one of the quartet, I always find.

ha!

Man, I'm fascinated by Chevy Chase. I suspect that he's a very unhappy man. I like his small role as the gambilng addicted surgeon in Norm Mcdonald/Bob Saget's Dirty Work. If no one recalls, he hit bottom betting on the fight in Rocky III. He bet against Rocky.

his pop-psych band Chameleon Church were really good.he, apparently, is one of the nastiest people on earth.

he went to my college and was 'separated from the community' which is the polite Quaker way of saying "grow the fuck up before you think of coming back to school"

met him briefly when he was wondering around the campus one day, was friendly enough then

Foul Play, although I used to really like Fletch. I have perverse need to view "Nothing but Trouble" one of these days because I remember seeing something about it at least a year before it came out and thinking it looked cool (look, I was like 17, okay) and it's apparently painfully unfunny and aweful.

Laurabush.info is a surprisingly excellent web resource on all things Chevy.

I named my cat after him, he's great.

Fletch of course (though Vacation is pure class).

Chase is terrific in Fletch, but my problem with that film is that NOBODY else in the movie is allowed to be funny or react to the absurd stuff coming out of his mouth (except Joe Don Baker, who isn't gonna be cowed around by some fucking smartass comedian NO HOW). Lots of great lines but the film just gets damn repetitive.

I'm gonna pick the first Vacation film (though I'm fighting between that and Christmas Vacation). Cuz there's more going on for Chase to react to (any time I see a hot girl now I want to wave a sandwich around), not to mention John Candy and Randy Quaid.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 1 May 2003 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd be tempted to pick Caddyshack, but I won't cuz I'm protesting that bullshit teen-lead crap. It's like those old Marx Bros. films where they'd add some bullshit "plot" to hide the fact that the movie is really just random jokes flying around.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 1 May 2003 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I gotta go with Vacation, too -- Fletch might do it for me, except I'd been reading the books, and the movie's very different.

You know Nothing But Trouble was originally titled Valkenvania, but they changed it at the last minute. There was even a spread on it in Premiere magazine under the title Valkenvania. I imagine them testing the title in some bleak 80's mall -- "which title do you like better: Nothing But Trouble, Who My Neighbor or Valkenvania"?

fletch. so many great moments - 'what kind of a name is poon?' 'now, i can't have my wages garnisheed' etc.

ron (ron), Thursday, 1 May 2003 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Is "Cops and Robbersons" the worst excuse for a pun-title ever? (He's a cop. The family's name is "Robbersons"... etc.)

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Thursday, 1 May 2003 09:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Foul Play without a doubt is the seventies best screwball comedy. (Goldie also gets the eighties best screwball comedy award too in Overboard). I really like Fletch, but this is more due to an attachment to the book than the film, where Chevvy mugs to much to be the street smart journo (and the basketball dream fantasy is just embarressing).

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 1 May 2003 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i've never seen the neil simon adaptation seems like old times or something like that - it's apparently an unofficial sequel to foul play?

j fail (cenotaph), Thursday, 1 May 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i rented fletch on friday night and it was great! took me back to when i was 12 years old and it was my favorite film. chevy chase seemed SO COOL in it. and it's before i got into boring pretentious art-films.
