Roman Polanski, then...

For some reason, I've never been a fan. I saw Rosemary's Baby, Cul De Sac, Chinatown, and errr, The Ninth Gate, but stopped there. Of those four, I only really enjoyed ("got"?) Chinatown. However, I think it's time I gave dirty old Roman a second chance. Where should I start? I've never seen The Tenant or Repulsion, so I guess either of those would be decent jumping off points...

Repulsion bored me...I ended up ffwding hoping to find dirty parts but they weren't there. Chinatown was enjoyable but I wish they'd kept Towne's original ending. I actually enjoyed the Ninth Gate a bit as camp - though the ending was weak.

Actually my favorite Polanski film is probably Bitter Moon. Peter Coyote in a wheelchair telling dirty anecdotes to Hugh Grant until their world explodes. Nice!

Can't imagine if you disliked Rosemary's Baby you'll find much value in the other two segments of the apartment "trilogy." Still, I'm too much of a fan of both Repulsion and The Tenant to do anything else but impore you to see them both as fast as you can. And, yes, Bitter Moon was fantastic.

Repulsion and The Tenant are Polanski's two best films; it's true that they're similar to Rosemary's baby, but they're both better (none of the religious stuff, just pure closed space pcycho-drama). The Pianist was surprisingly good too, the best WWII film in ages.

Polanski is one of my favourite directors:

His first is very good: Knife in the Water: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000AINJ8/metasoul

I never saw the tenant but I think I would enjoy it (it was written by Roland Topor)

Oh,

And don't forget the Fearless Vampire Killers

I think The Tenant is one of the scariest/funniest movies ever made. Ditto Repulsion except for the funny. Tuomas, Repulsion, Rosemary's Baby and The Tenant are all part of an unofficial but deliberate trilogy on the subject of apartment-dweller paranoia-- and they all deal with it uniquely, I think.

I love most Polanski films: Chinatown, Rosemary's Baby, The Tenant, The 9th Gate, but absolutely detest The Fearless Vampire Killers. It is neither funny or sacry, and deeply unenteraining. I couldn't wait for it to finish.

Sad really, the movie posts SHOULD go here...

Nhex, Tuesday, 13 January 2009 16:35 (sixteen years ago)

Why? ILE has done fine as the repository of film threads for 8 years now.

Eric H., Tuesday, 13 January 2009 16:37 (sixteen years ago)

yeah 'fine'

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 13 January 2009 20:35 (sixteen years ago)

By that, I mean people talk and threads don't die after three posts.

Eric H., Tuesday, 13 January 2009 20:43 (sixteen years ago)

That is true. It's more a principle/efficiency thing - there are enough threads to warrant ILF, and ILE is always super clogged as it is.

love this guy's films

Cul de Sac is my absolute favorite.

Repulsion is, according to my shrink father, an accurate rendition of what it's like to be a schizophrenic.

cul de sac was oddly dull

I thought the ending of Repulsion might suggest that there is someone within the family, or just outside the frame, that might be party somehow to Deneuve's madness.

Also noticed that a group of older people and/or apartment building residents all get together for the ending scenes of Repulsion, Rosemary's Baby, and the Tenant.
