Visionary or pretentious as hell?

Neither. Just not good.

the trailer looked good but I had a feeling it would be as boring as Twin Falls Idaho and without the cute bad actress girlfriend. They should just become cinematographers and set designers or make commercials or something.

Northfork seemed to have a sort of false innocence about it, especially with the scenes involving the angels, always straining to be winsome - though if taken as the child's dreams I suppose this is excusable. I really enjoyed Nick Nolte's performance, as well as a lot of the interactions between the evacuators and their unwilling evacuees. The music was good, the cinematography fairly inspired in a contrived gray dream sort of way, and ignoring the 'spiritual' undercurrent the story was interesting, though its telling may have relied to heavily on visual elements. Like A.I. I felt like Northfork was a grand failure, though I am having a hard time pinning down its fatal flaw. I hope the Polish brothers return to making movies more like Jackpot, but I would be excited to see most anything they produce compared to most of what Hollywood concocts.

Indeed.
