Neo-realism on DVD...

I read almost universally negative reviews on the Image DVD versions of these movies (Rome, Open City; Paisan; Germany, Year Zero; Bicycle Thieves; Obsessione; Terra Trema - Umberto D. is now Criterion (?)). Are they that bad? Are other versions in the works. My first film crit book was "The Altering Eye" so forgive me if I am a little incredulous that these titles weren't among the first Criterion released.

Thanks.

The Bicycle Thief is the only DVD I have (I didn't know Open City was even out, OMG must order now), but it isn't bad. A little washed out, but Italian midday sun can do that to you.

Open City is out but Paisan is actually still MIA I believe.

can i make this thread more interesting and ask people what their neo-realist films are and why?
