R.E.M.'s "Nightswimming," directed by Jem Cohen=best video I've ever seen. Beautiful song, beautiful video. In a close second is Rage Against the Machine's "Testify." I don't know who directed it or who came up with the concept, but I laugh my ass off every time I see it. Pirate a copy off the internet if you can.

Predictably, I like the little promo for Tom Waits "What's He Building?".

i'm a huge jem cohen fan, so i have to agree with anthony. for those not experienced with jem's work, visit www.vdb.org or pick up "benjamin smoke" or "instrument" on dvd. still praying for a criterion release of his work.

i've never seen the tom waits promo, but, hey, it's Tom Waits. it's gotta be great. for anyone who hasn't seen his bizarre musical stage show on film "Big
Time", rent it if you can find it.

I'll never forget his appearance on "fishing with john" when he put the red snapper down his pants.

Jem Cohen + Fugazi = Instrument: bona fide masterpiece

I had no idea Jem Cohen directed "Nightswimming." It's been years since I've seen it but some of the video's lonely late night images have stuck with me. Has Cohen directed any other music videos?

Jem also directed REM's "E-Bow the Letter". He made a short film about the late Eliot Smith called "lucky three" which can be purchased as part of a video compilation at this site:

He's also worked with Vic Chesnutt, Sparklehorse, Cat Power, Blonde Redhead, Patti Smith, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, the Orpheus Orchestra, and, of course, Smoke and Fugazi (for "Instrument", "Glue Man", "Black Hole Radio")

If anyone is interested in buying any of his short films, go to www.vdb.org. You can get any of them for $30 each if they're for personal use only (no screenings).
