About time - Reg 1 DVD, all 7 movies, class!!!

My favorite character is Proctor and my favorite movie in the series is Part 2. I did enjoy the jet ski robbery chase from Part 3 though. Part 4: Citizens on Patrol has the skateboarding, the Brian Wilson song "Let's go to Heaven in my Car (I Want to take you there Tonight)," and the final image of Mahoney (Steve Guttenberg) and Sharon Stone dissapearing into the horizon on a hot air balloon. I too concur that it's about time.

The special features are a bit lacking - and Steve Guttenberg doesn't say much during the first film's commentary track. I still think the original is one of the great comedies ("So tell me, do you are your wife do it doggie style?" is brilliant) and you also get Kim Catrall in a policewoman's uniform. Obviously my awareness of who Georgina Spelvin is must be quite recent because I didn't know who she was last time I saw the film.

The second one is excellent. My fave line is "what kind of clown do you think I am Mahoney?" - "A juggling clown sir?"

Will get round to watching the others, but I recall that once Steve and Bobcat left they all sucked pretty bad.

For the love of all things sacred -- please tell me you are joking.

BabyBuddha (BabyBuddha), Saturday, 10 April 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Joking about what?

CRW (CRW), Saturday, 10 April 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Expressing any excitement about a DVD release of these awful films or discussing the merits of any of them.

Call me a snob, but I think that part one was a terrible waste of celluloid. The fact that the series continued -- to what, 35 or so, is beyond frightening.

Didn't Carrot Top appear in one? Paulie Shore?

BabyBuddha (BabyBuddha), Saturday, 10 April 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

You're no fun.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 11 April 2004 05:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Clearly you're missing the point that, although these films have crap moments, there are still classic jokes in most of them (even the lousy Part 5 has Harris walking around with "Dork" written on his chest).

No, Paulie Shore wasn't in any of them - at least I don't think he was.

CRW (CRW), Sunday, 11 April 2004 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

No, latebloormer was right -- I'm no fun. ^_^

wow, i haven't even thought about these movies in years, but when i was ten years old they were the true pinnacle of all things hilarious. i remember steve guttenburg locked out of his hotel room naked, a hovercraft chase through the florida everglades, bobcat goldwaithe, and the dude who made those special effects sounds. i should rent a couple again for the nostalgia value alone.

I'm at Part 4 just now. It's Proctor who's locked out of the hotel room naked (in Part 3). They have a ton of slow spots throughout (the exceptions being the first 2 which still hold up and are genuinelly really funny), but as a kid of the 80s who saw them at the cinema, this is a fine nostalgia trip. Bobcat Goldwait should be in every film - did anyone see "Shakes the Clown" or "One Crazy Summer" where Bobcat basically played Zed but in different films?

The best bit in the entire series is still Georgina Spelvin giving George Gaynes a blow job underneath the podium in the first film. Steve Guttenberg is a better actor than people remember him for - "Bedroom Window" is a great little drama that tends to be overlooked when people label him as "that guy who did Police Academy and Three Men and a Baby". He did "Bad Medicine" too, which was kinda funny.

They Should put all of the Revenge of the Nerds in a DVD Set.

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

How about a special Porky's box set, with deleted scenes, digital remastering, and running commentary from Norman Mailer and Camille Paglia.

BabyBuddha (BabyBuddha), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"Porky's" is even better than "Police Academy" and Bob Clark is a great director (see also "Black Christmas" and "Murder by Decree"). Said he'd be up for an audio commentary for "Porky's", which he is very proud of, but CBSFOX who holds the rights never asked him. "Revenge of the Nerds" has its moments, but it ran out of jokes before the end credits of the first film and lacked the characters of "Academy" or "Porky's". Anyone remember "Screwballs"?

I suspect "the police academy collection" is one of the few cinematic, uh, treats that is actually inferior to "the shannon tweed collection", actually.

i might rent the first one again because i don't remember it well. But I guessing in the absence of a 12-year old brain or marijuana that it probably won't hold too much charm for me.
