oh yea, dont name a bunch of anime either.

How about starting with a less contentious subject heading, perhaps?

BabyBuddha (BabyBuddha), Saturday, 10 April 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

it is kind of fitting, though, considering the average american's film diet is 99% directed by white males.

Spike Lee
Wong Kar Wai
Almodovar
Ozu

that's all i can muster right now--i'm sick as a dog.

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Sunday, 11 April 2004 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

But Almodovar is a European.

My point is that the question should have been phrased differently -- for example, are you interested in films of the African diaspora, Asian cinema, black American filmmakers. . .?

Saying "non-whitey" is a bit off-color, no?

I would consider Putney Swope a non-whitey film, even though its director, Robert Downey Sr., is white as can be.

BabyBuddha (BabyBuddha), Sunday, 11 April 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Good point. It would help for a bit more specifics on what you're looking for. If you're just looking for different viewpoints from the European perspective, seeking out the films of a different race/culture may not necessarily be your answer--i don't find the majority of Kurosawa's films to be simply "Japanese films" because his film education was mostly Western & his influences were mainly American films.

Also add Satyajit Ray to the list.

Yeah, such an argumentative heading has no place in the tactful and restrained world of ILx!

Even though you said no anime, do check out please some Miyazaki, in particular Spirited Away.

Also, Whale Rider (a Kiwi/Maori joint).

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

G.S. pretty much covered the gambit of narrative, but check out some of Trinh T. Minh Ha's work if you can find it. She does some incredible ethnographical documentaries with strong themes concerning her Asian-American and feminist viewpoints. "Reassemblage" is one of the most incredible films I've ever seen. Her writings are also fantastic--check out "Cinema Intervals"

I can't believe I forgot Kiarostami--I was really ill this weekend.

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

gambit

gamut? [/grammarbitch]

Girolamo Savonarola, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

On the basis of Distant alone, Nuri Bilge Ceylan seems at least one-quarter honky.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Sunday, 18 April 2004 06:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps (haven't seen it) - but Clouds of May completely counteracts that.
