The Homage Thread

here's a thread to list scenes where the director is making an obvious homage to an earlier film or filmmaker.

this was spurred by the fact that, in watching "touch of evil" again last night, i realized that brian depalma borrowed welles' motif of the bridge and recording device (complete with a troublesome echo) in the final sequence of "blow out." you could probably make a whole thread of depalma homages alone, or homages to welles alone, but regardless - please list some here.

(that should have read the opening sequence of "blow out" but you see my point)

In Elephant Gus Van Sant pays hommage to Bela Tarr by duplicating some shots from Satantango.

Are we just talking homage in terms of duplicating shots/sequences, or direct references to another film (such as the oft-used "movie playing on the tube in the background of the scene")?

There's always the famous recreation of Potemkin's "Odessa Steps" sequence in "The Untouchables".

We could do a whole thread just with Woody Allen films:

Interiors = Bergman
Stardust Memories = Fellini
Husbands and Wives = Godard

jay, you forgot Play It Again Sam which is basically about homages.

why do i miss husbands and wives relation to godard? i cant claim to have an immense knowledge of godards work though so...

are we just talking about a generally messy sort of style? i do remember taking note of the less structured and formal approach. i saw it only just last week. yes, i suppose i see it.

H&W is not so much an homage in terms of content, but definitely in terms of style. "Deconstructing Harry"'s start is another.

Here's an amusing one I heard about recently. A scene in Toy Story features a "cameo" by the carpet design used for the corridors of the Overlook Hotel in The Shining.

Are there any specific homages in The Wrong Trousers?

that story mention made me remember taht theres a "heres (johnny or maybe the characters name)" in finding nemo as there is in probably hundreds of other films.
