kaufmann is an interesting phenomenon, the screenwriter/non-director auteur. and considering his presence as a writer transcends the tremendous talents he has directing his films (michel gondry, spike jonze), it's quite an achievement. i can't think of another screenwriter who can boast the same.

Adam Sandler would fall into this catagory I think, since by now we associate certians qualities that re-occur throughout his star vehicles.

possibly some cinematographers can be associated with films more than the directors are. a bad example is raoul coutard, who was quite a tour de force in the french new wave... but godard, truffaut, et al do get the mention more than coutard

other examples of this phenomena are greg tolland and sven nykvist. gordon willis and nestor almendros also come to mind as DP auteurs.
