jerry lewis films

kaufmann is an interesting phenomenon, the screenwriter/non-director auteur. and considering his presence as a writer transcends the tremendous talents he has directing his films (michel gondry, spike jonze), it's quite an achievement. i can't think of another screenwriter who can boast the same.

Jerry Lewis directed a large number of his own star vehicles, he modeled his career on Chaplin. He authored a characteristically egotistical book on his approach making films titled "The Total Filmmaker." One unsettling detail of his process involves late nights of editing alone in which Jerry's love of film drives him to lick the emulsion material.

Adam Sandler would fall into this catagory I think, since by now we associate certians qualities that re-occur throughout his star vehicles.

Good point on the Adam Sandler. Comedians seem to fit well in this category--Jim Carrey, Chris Farley, etc.

i would say that jerry bruckheimer has a certain auteur feel to the movies he produces (which isnt necessarily positive).

possibly some cinematographers can be associated with films more than the directors are. a bad example is raoul coutard, who was quite a tour de force in the french new wave... but godard, truffaut, et al do get the mention more than coutard

good point, todd. only problem (as you express with the coutard example) is that good cinematographers often stick with one director for most of their career, and typically get overshadowed (even worse, their personal aesthetic is often attributed unjustly to the director).

other examples of this phenomena are greg tolland and sven nykvist. gordon willis and nestor almendros also come to mind as DP auteurs.

robbie muller is one cinematographer whose images i can often peg as "his" whether he's working with jarmusch or wenders or whoever.

Hmm... some of those cinematographers (I'm looking towards Hall) seemed to work exclusively with non-auteurs.

However, there's also the case of Jordan Cronenweth, who went from Brewster McCloud to the MST3K movie Touch of Satan to Blade Runner. (!)

Wow -- Currently having an argument on my site about this. I posted a note about seeing the Thai film "Last Life in the Universe" at the Tribeca Film Festival (AMAZING film), and how both the director and Christopher Doyle were there. It appears that Doyle's role was 'more' than cinematographer.
