so i saw this film last night, and i thought it was wonderful, a beautiful moving and sad love story. cant wait until its out on dvd so i can get it. dont know anything about chris doyle but it looked stunning, and i loved the ever so slightly cheesy cleaning fantasy, mainly cos thats totally my fantasy too!

so what about pen-ak ratanaraung? what else has he done? I wanted to see monrak transistor but missed it when it came out. Is that worth trying to track down?

any more love for this film?

I saw it at the Toronto fest last year and thought it was so-so. Clearly the work of an artist, but just didn't connect solidly with me. Tadanobu Asano remains sexy as hell, though.

Don't know any of the director's other films, but he sure was funny in the Q&A... a woman asked an idiotic question about characters smoking, and he kept coming back to it as a joke until she was forced to flee the theater.

one year passes...
Borrowed this from a co-worker and watched the first half last night before dozing off... there are some pretty funny parts so far. Can't see a lot of WKW-influence other than the language meltdown.

I thought this was fantastic. 69 is good, but a lot lighter/sillier/slapstick-y and no where near as gorgeous (no Doyle, nach).

The Ichi The Killer joke was pretty silly.

I don't remember that one -- did it involve Asano?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

Uh yeah it involved him eat people's heads.

Haha, no... it's pretty early on, immediately after the scene in the hostess bar where Kenji's brother and his friend (the guy who eventually kills him) are chatting about Kenji's brother going back to Japan even though he raped/slept with the Boss' daughter and Kenji's brother is in disbelief thinking that because he's been with the Boss so long that it would be no problem, that the friend has seen to many Yakuza movies...

*CUT TO*

The "Ichi The Killer" poster on the endcap of one aisle of the Japanese library where Kenji's spying on Nid.

OK. I realize I don't remember a single scene from Last Life.

Finally finished it, the Kenji-as-Yakuza plot twist was surprising (although I've probably seen like 3 yakuza movies in my life, so that may be why).

What are your guys' takes on the ambiguous ending? Did he escape? Or did he finally make do on his "bliss"?

(PS: I found this movie to be pretty funny more than sad/moving. It sure is gorgeous though. Go see Tony Takitani if you want something similar to this side of Doyle's cinematography).

Steve, don't make a habit of this watching films in segments crap!

Tony Takitani is a massively underappreciated film from last year. I think.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 15:18 (nineteen years ago)
