"The Bank Dick" also went OOP at the end of August. Don't know why though.

Doobie Keebler (Charles McCain), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 18:11 (twenty years ago)

New edition of Bank Dick from the studio. No big loss on that one, either, since there are no special features on the DVD.

JUSHINTHUNDERLIGER (deangulberry), Saturday, 6 November 2004 23:57 (twenty years ago)

That is wild! I've seen complete lots on ebay that include the out-of-print titles. Is it a good deal though?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 7 November 2004 19:37 (twenty years ago)

According to that you save $2,250 but it's hard to tell if that's off what Amazon would charge if you bought those all separately from them or if you bought them all from Criterion, aka the MSRP. That collection is too huge of a pipe dream for me to even considering trying to figure out the reasoning behind this. All I know is that I don't need it and can't afford it but want it badly.

jushinthunderliger (deangulberry), Monday, 8 November 2004 20:02 (twenty years ago)

You could start your own rental store!

Actually, one of the reviewers notes that it's $21.78/disc, which doesn't sound that great considering there are some many supplemental discs.

**selling my car now**

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Monday, 8 November 2004 23:51 (twenty years ago)

Weird. They dropped the price to $4999.00. So that's $20.74 per title and $17.73 per disc. Getting better all the time.

jushinthunderliger (deangulberry), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 00:47 (twenty years ago)

its too bad that i already have a quarter of the collection.

todd swiss (eliti), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 04:56 (twenty years ago)

Me too... and it's the quarter that constitutes, y'know, most of the titles I'd ever want anyway.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:40 (twenty years ago)

For $900 I'm in!

According to the new website, Nights of Cabiria is now OOP as is Port of Shadows. These could be bugs w/the site.

It looks like those were bugs, but it has been confirmed that Ran has been put OOP (and the upcoming bluray has been canceled) due to a licensing issue.

Contempt may be going out of print- no official confirmation yet, and it may be a bug as with Nights of Cabiria and Port of Shadows, but it's marked as OOP on their site as of yesterday, and reports are circulating that an attempt to license the new HD transfer for a blu-ray release fell through. The similarities to the Ran situation are close enough that I'm definitely running out and picking this up at my first opportunity; it was the last Godard Criterion I hadn't bought yet anyway (except for Tout va Bien, which I'm not terribly fond of).

Uh-oh:

Dear Criterion collectors,

Our three least favorite initials: OOP. Since we launched the Criterion Collection more than twenty-five years ago, we’ve endeavored to keep everything we’ve published in print. But despite our efforts to renew rights, we are losing a large group of titles from StudioCanal at the end of March, and we wanted to give you advance notice that our editions will be going out of print. Until we’re out of stock, we will be offering these titles at an additional $5 off on our website. The titles are going to Lionsgate, and we don’t know when they may be rereleased. As ever, we will continue to try to relicense the films so that they can rejoin the collection sometime in the future.

Here are the titles that will soon be out of print:

Alphaville
Carlos Saura’s Flamenco Trilogy (Eclipse Series 6)
Le corbeau
Coup de torchon
Diary of a Country Priest
The Fallen Idol
Forbidden Games (Criterion and Essential Art House editions)
Gervaise (Essential Art House edition)
Grand Illusion (Criterion and Essential Art House editions)
Le jour se lève (Essential Art House edition)
Last Holiday (Essential Art House edition)
Mayerling (Essential Art House edition)
The Orphic Trilogy
Peeping Tom
Pierrot le fou (DVD and Blu-ray editions)
Port of Shadows
Quai des Orfèvres
The Small Back Room
The Tales of Hoffmann (Criterion and Essential Art House editions)
Trafic
Le trou
Variety Lights (Essential Art House edition)
The White Sheik

Take note: this may be your last chance to pick up spine number 1 from the collection.

Happy viewing!
The Criterion Collection

am usually jealous of all the US 50% sales but hmv currently has a 40% off sale, making them about £11. picked up the one thing that i hadn't already seen, Sword of Doom (would've been more adventurous if i didn't have the Daiei Gothic set earmarked)
