Why can't Pixar make something other than a comedy?

Jim Henson did it in the 80s with Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. If Pixar made a movie similar to these it would be incredible. They have amazing visual capabilities, but their movies lack artistry.

Hey you, Pixar employee reading this. Do something about it.

I think the relative lack of commercial success of those films is a Biiiig reason you won't be seeing one any time soon.

But it would be so easy now with just saying "from the makers of Monsters Inc, Toy Story, etc we give you _______" That would get enough commercial success wouldn't it?

I hear they have a fantasy epic in development... but that'll be years away.

It'd be like a more cartoonish version of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (which was actually a good movie except for the ending)

Nairn, you kinda answered your own question. Did the fact that Henson made the Dark Crystal and Labyrinth make THEM successful? Nope. Though like those films (and probably Final Fantasy), it would undoubtedly gain a cult audience.

Comedy! = "lack of artistry"

"Comedy! = 'lack of artistry'"
Yeah that's definately true, but a childrens animation comedy that is also really creativly done is rare. I don't think I can name many. (something like Wallace and Grommit, or early cartoons, and maybe Spongebob Squarepants comes close)

Since Pixar have made the most commercially successful, reknowned and respected comedies of the last six years I think they should continue rather than fanny around with drama. More power to their elbow.

"reknowned and respected comedies of the last six years"

I may be alone on this, but I think the only good movies they've made have been the Toy Story movies. I'm not really saying they shouldn't do more comedies, but they should just make better movies. If they have amazing visuals, it seems like they could put the same effort into the writing and get an amazing movie all around.
