Should I Go See "The Big Red One" at Film Forum?

The only Fuller film I've seen is The Steel Helmet, and that was probably 7 years ago, but I remember liking it. I also love seeing classic movies in the theater.

Is this a great film? Will I regret the extra 45 minutes of my life that will be devoted to the extra directors cut footage?

YES! Absolutely yes.

i'm looking forward to seeing the reconstruction when it plays near me. "fixed bayonets" is another must-see fuller war film.

I heard Hamill and the guy that oversaw the reconstruction on NPR today. I definitely want to see it now.

Hamill was surprisingly intelligent sounding.

Fuck you for even asking this. I can only dream about the day it shows up in Minneapolis. (Actually, I might be speaking too soon.)

I feel your pain. When I lived further south in NJ (now I'm in Jersey City) all we had was the Loews Sani-Plex. Three screens of any movie you don't want to see.

I'm almost positive I spoke too soon, now. The Oak Street in Minneapolis actually seems to snag a good portion of the really high-profile art-house reissues... far more, at any rate, than new releases. The Leopard will be screening there in a week and a half. I've got my fingers crossed for Fuller.

I think you should try to catch earlier Fullers first if you have time; at least one or two of the war films included, as TBR1 seems to be a "summing up."

Slant says it's great, while Hoberman recommends but "no masterpiece":
