Hi All--

I just purchased web space & I wanted to see if anybody would be interested if I set up a weekly "members-only" film download. I'm planning on posting short documentary and experimental works that are either unavailable in the public domain or very difficult to find.

Some possible choices:

* Jem Cohen, "Lost Book Found", "Glue Man", "Little Flags"
* Bruce Connor "Looking for Mushrooms"
* Caveh Zahedi "I Was Possessed By God"
* Kenneth Anger "Invocation of My Demon Brother"
* Leighton Pierce "Wood", "Glass (Memories of Water)", "Red Shovel"

The films would be available in a low-rez 240x180 for folks with dial-up connections and high-rez 320x240 for those with faster connections. If enough interest is generated, I may purchase more bandwith so that I can provide full 720x486 Hi-Rez QuickTimes or MPEG-2's.

If you're interested, please write to me at: kinojay33@yahoo.com

Also, if you have any requests or would like to provide a film to screen (your own personal films are highly encouraged), let me know.

Now that sounds like a cool idea. I don't know how to provide films online, but it still sounds like a neat idea.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

If you want to submit films and don't have the equipment to create a QuickTime, send me an e-mail & I'll send my mailing address. I can convert VHS,DVD, miniDV, BetaSP, etc. to web-sized QuickTime files.

Even if you don't have films to contribute, please let me know if you're interested in being on a mailing list for the downloads. If I get ten or more responses to this, I'll post the first movie next week.

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

This is free?

jushinthunderliger (deangulberry), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Absolutely. I have no interest in making a profit; I'm just frustrated by the lack of access that I've had trying to find experimental films on the web, and I'd like to provide a place where interested people can download them.

Because of bandwith restrictions, I'd like to keep this limited to ILF posters. If you want in, just drop me a line. Just be sure that if you want to share it with friends who are not signed on, download the file & burn it to a disk for them instead of giving them the link to the site. The file size will probably be fairly large for the hi-rez version & I'll blow my upload limitations pretty quick if everybody and their brother get the address (because god knows everyone will be clamoring to download experimental & documentary shorts!)

I'm looking forward to be sharing some of my favorite films with those of you interested, and I hope you'll do the same.

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Thursday, 11 November 2004 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i think we need to set up an ilf slsk room.

:| (....), Thursday, 11 November 2004 06:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Even if you don't have films to contribute, please let me know if you're interested in being on a mailing list for the downloads.

I don't really have very much (read: "anything") that's likely rare enough for this project, but I'm interested in being on the mailing list, nonetheless.

I can never get SLSK to work properly on my Mac, unfortunately.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 11 November 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

You're on the list Eric. I'll probably post the first movie this weekend, so I'll let you know when I do.

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Thursday, 11 November 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't make films but that list of films above is intriguing and great. i'd be down for this.

joseph (joseph), Thursday, 11 November 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be posting the first "ILF Download of the Week" this weekend, so please e-mail me if soon if you want to get the weblink.

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Friday, 12 November 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i have 'la jetee' if you'd be interested in that... i could email it to you or upload it somewhere if you do...
also could you include me on any list for info? thanks...

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 12 November 2004 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldn't exactly call that film rare (unless you have a copy of it with a French soundtrack, I guess), but to the extent that everyone in the world should see it, it is worth considering for this service.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 12 November 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldn't mind having a copy of "La Jetee". I'll be sure to add you to the mailing list as well.

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Saturday, 13 November 2004 03:33 (twenty-one years ago)

For all of you who are signed up for the ILF Free Film Download posse, the link to the first film has been sent. If you haven't received it by 5:00PM EST, let me know & I'll send it to you again.

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Saturday, 13 November 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi. I am interested in this. Although I already have a copy of La Jetee.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 14 November 2004 09:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I am interested in this but feel bad for saying so. : /

I'd be interested in a copy of 'la jetee' too.

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 14 November 2004 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm definitely interested, I'll e-mail you Jay.

This was broached on ILE at one point - any interest in a DVD-R chain for things that only exist as bootlegs? All the bootleg sites charge an arm and a leg ($13-20+ seems like), it would be a better value if there were other people who'd get something out of it. (I've never been involved in CD/tape-trading so I don't know how to work it out.)

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Sunday, 14 November 2004 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm planning on taking down the link for the first film download tonight or tomorrow. Please let me know if you still need to download it.

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

The next free fllm download will be up tomorrow evening. I'll send a link to all of you on the mailing list. If you would like to sign up for the mailing list to get a link to free weekly short film downloads, please send me an e-mail.

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Saturday, 20 November 2004 04:17 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
someone should share these films with lphant, we could then write entries about them and share them in this fashion:

Film situationiste, suite de "La Dialectique peut-elle casser des briques? ", transforme du cinéma nulle pinku ( Wild Woman Boss Story – Total Lynch de Teruo Ishii et Horror High School Women de Norifumi Suzuki – Violent Lynch Classroom) en occasion de déconstruction, pour proposer de la théorie situationiste. Le film est en langue originale (japonais) avec sous-titres à la fois anglais et français.

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Thursday, 23 December 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm.....this could be an interesting way of doing it.

I've been wanting to see this Debord piece for awhile--thanks for posting it!

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Thursday, 23 December 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I forgot to write the title of the film upthread "les filles de kamare" (a rené vienet film)

Here's the "first part" of it, "can dialectic break bricks" :
(si)rene_vienet_-_la_dialectique_peut-elle_casser_des_briques_-_can_dialectic_break_bricks__(1973).avi

some Debord films: the society of the spectacle

Guy Debord - The Society of the Spectacle (1973) 2.mpg

and it's "follow up", "Refutation of All the Judgments, Pro or Con, Thus Far Rendered on the Film The Society of the Spectacle" :

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Thursday, 23 December 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Sebastien--thanks for posting those, but unfortunately I'm only getting errors when I try to either click on the links or do a "save target as". Any ideas?

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Thursday, 23 December 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Also--ILF Free Film Clubbers, I haven't forgotten about you! It's been a little busy for the holidays & I'm trying to highlight my own films on the site right now, but I'll be posting something soon. I found my copy of films by Tom Palazzolo, so that may be a possibility.

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Thursday, 23 December 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

you have to install the proper p2p program to get the download started, it would work with edonkey but I suggest lphant instead

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Thursday, 23 December 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

It's very easy to link to films like I did: install the software, run it, then right click on the film you want to link to (either appearing in the search result window or in the folder you are sharing) : the "right click" window will say something like "copy the elink in the clipboard" then you just have to "paste" it, like, on this thread: it'll appear like any ol' hyperlink.

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Thursday, 23 December 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

lphant discriminates against Mac users.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Thursday, 23 December 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, okay. I have edonkey so I'll try it tonight when I have access to my home computer. I may need to hit you up for assistance, because I'm sure I'll screw up the whole "copy to clipboard" thing.

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Thursday, 23 December 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for those links. I need to grab that Debord.

I'm serious ... Ti-i-i-i-im (deangulberry), Thursday, 23 December 2004 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't forget about Kuchars, Jay! Please!

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 23 December 2004 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't worry--Kuchar will be coming very soon!

Figured out the edonkey with those links ok--thanks again Sebastien! There's some INCREDIBLE stuff available on edonkey/lphant--I found results for Brakhage, Bruce Conner, Kenneth Anger, Jem Cohen....it's just a matter of getting lucky enough to find people online with the files or keeping my computer on for days straight to work my way through the cue line.

I'd like to continue the ILF film download in the same method, so people can get instant access to a quick download. But if anyone does download anything from p2p's that they would like to share for the ILF download, please send me an e-mail. If you can burn the file to a CD or DVD, I'll pay for the media costs and shipping.

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Friday, 24 December 2004 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

anyone got an .mpg or .mov of Anger's "Scorpio Rising"?

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 26 December 2004 03:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I only have "Invocation..." and "Lucifer Rising". They're all listed on edonkey, but for some reason I've had zero luck in downloading any of them.

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Sunday, 26 December 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Saturday, 22 January 2005 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for the links Sebastien, but I've pretty much given up on going the edonkey route. It usually requires me to leave my computer running for about five days straight in order to download a 600 meg file. You can only handle being 9940th place in the queue for so long....

I'm going to continue with the Free Film Downloads the way it's been going, because although they're only compressed 320x240 files, at least they download quickly.

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Saturday, 22 January 2005 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think it works with queue, it's about people having the file being online or not, since you can get parts from many people/ share the load among many people but it's true it can take up to a few days to get the film.

Maybe someone on your mailing list will cross over and add to the arthouse / repertoire cinema on that network, I have seen lot of things but not Jem Cohen, Bruce Connor, Caveh Zahedi, Leighton Pierce

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Saturday, 22 January 2005 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

jed_, if you're still reading this, i have scorpio rising and a couple other anger films, if you still need 'em.

also, jay, i have some stuff that could potentially be of interest to you/the ILF download list. let me know if you're interested.

joseph (joseph), Monday, 24 January 2005 04:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't get those links to work and desperately want to see Numero Deux. Any suggestions?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 24 January 2005 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Eric, read further up the thread for instructions. You have to copy the link to your clipboard & paste it into eDonkey. Or, if you want to bypass the several day download, send me an e-mail & a DVD-R of "Numero Deux" could show up magically in your mailbox....

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Monday, 24 January 2005 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

(Seb, thanks and please continue to post such links.)
