Luis Bunuel

Had to get away from the umteenth moronic debate about "rockism" & film....

So I've seen very little Bunuel (only Un Chien Andalou, Belle De Jour, Viridiana, Discreet Charm of the Bourgousie). I've liked everything I've seen thus far, and was thinking of renting another one of his films this weekend. Any recommendations?

Fcuk man, pretty much everything. See some of the Mexican stuff: Most famous two:
Los Olvidados
The Exterminating Angel

are both great. What else?

El (That Strange Passion)
Susanna
The Criminal Life of Archibaldo del la Cruz
and so on.

French (w/ some Spanish actors, dubbed by some famous French ones)
That Obscure Object of Desire

Spanish(I think) w/ vice a versa dubbing)
Tristana (supposedly a favorite of Hitchcock)

For a short one but very great one"
Simon of the Desert.

Simon of the Desert strongly seconded. Quite handily my favorite Buñuel of the small handful I've seen. I've read that the end of the film was conceived out of total frustration and that Buñuel himself didn't really have any clue what he was trying to say, but I think it was Kael who said that and strikes me as a total cop-out. Even if he didn't know how he wanted to reign in his film narratively, it's clear that the non-sequitor finale carries over the film proper's skepticism of piety and lip-service thereof.

That ending totally skewers '60s rockism. *ducks*

(Haha. I love that I mentioned the word "hand" twice in the second sentance. Those who've seen the film will understand my glee.)

That ending was just another proof that Don Luis was the master: he know better than anybody how to take something seemingly random and really make it work. Hopefully I can say this better in a later post.

Eric, did you really have to use the "R-word"?

i have seen discreet charm, obscure object of desire, belle du jour, the milky way, un chien andalou and the golden age.

un chien and the milky way are my favorites. the milky way is just a bunch of hilarious shots at the church and there are a bunch oc classic scenes.

The least well known of those is The Milky Way. I remember seeing it just out of completism and ending up really liking it. The title refers to the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. As I remember it the characters are making their way to Santiago and keep meeting weird people with strange ideas. Later I found out that each one was enacting a very specific historical heresy.

The Discreet Charm of the Burgeoisie is my favorite, but I also love Los Olvidados.

i've only seen belle du jour and un chien andalou and i just picked up viridian for 19.99. i chose it over phantom of liberty and fellinis vitelloni, am now having second thoughts. i may just go out and get phantom of liberty later as it was the last one at the store.

I don't remember seeing The Milky Way before. I went to Catholic school for 8 years, but damn, I couldn't get all the heresy references. Some funny stuff tho, esp Jesus as a bland folksinger type.

I like the nuns nailing their sister to the cross.

An amusing film that I found tedious after half an hour, although its form and tone are truer to Don Luis' affinities for Spanish picaresque literature than the Galdos adapations.

One of his best imo.

The Vatican liked it too.

Liked that much more than I would have thought from the description. Only saw once 25 years ago, though.
