I don't read a lot of critics anymore, but I feel like there has to be some good ones I don't know about. Feel free to include amateurs as well...

amateurists? How would I know who his favorite critics are?

I appreciate Fred Camper, if only for the fact that he's the only film critic left that will not review a film based on a video copy. It's amazing how many critics will review a film based on a screener that has a reformatted aspect ratio, even incomplete films sometimes. There's no appreciation of formalism anymore in the cinema; only story and gloss.

Jonathan Rosenbaum - Chicago Reader

Stuart Klawans - The Nation

I hardly agree with them all the time, but they're consistently intelligent and passionate.

does fred camper write about new film anywhere? i see his blurbs in the chicago reader from time to time, but usually for older films or art exhibitions.

lately i've found myself really enjoying stephanie zacharek's reviews for salon. i don't always agree with her, but she's a fine stylist and her reviews are often insightful.

I haven't kept up. How's Jim Hoberman doing these days? Slipping?

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

I read Hoberman every week willingly, but have always found his taste unreliable. (ie, he raved for Dogville and Before Sunset)

on occasion he will, but mainly for newer avant-garde films. His website is www.fredcamper.com

xpost:
He was one of the few who dissed Titanic IIRC. (Counterexamples welcome)
Man, did I fcuking hate the predecessor,Before Sunrise. To me, Rick L is kind of an idiot-savant, unlike the soi-disant savant idiots in his movies. Sometimes he makes good films but it's not entirely intentional.
