:-)

Man, I love him as the father in the The Lady Eve when he walks down the stairs singing "For Tonight We'll Merry Merry Be", sits down at the table, looks around, says "Where's my breakfast?" realizes all the staff are preparing for the party and finally starts banging the shiny food-warming covers together.

was there another thread about actor/actresses who are not household names, but you see cropping up in lots of old TV/series?

Anyway, I've been watching an episode of Whack-o from 1960 on youtube and thinking about how much I like Keith Smith's look:

I saw a pleasant Beatrice Lillie silent vehicle last night, Exit Smiling (1926), and Franklin Pangborn played the leading man in her theatrical troupe. It was his first feature film (he was about 37), and already in full nelly mode, panicking constantly with hands in flight.

Jimmy Conlin, the little desiccated guy in almost every Preston Sturges comedy, has a choice 90 seconds as an unapologetic liquor thief in Preminger's Anatomy of a Murder. He's arraigned immediately before Ben Gazzara. Though he's in his mid 70s he's instantly recognizable.

Going to add

Hank Worden

as well, especially since I didn’t vote for him in the REAL classic Western character actors poll

Just saw him say his signature line in The Searchers in a scene in the Romanian movie The Whistlers, “I’ve been baptized, Reverend, I’ve been baptized.” Also, hadn’t remembered him being on Twin Peaks.

Just saw Pangborn as a professional co-respondant (who claims to 1) be married and 2) working his way through college) in Unknown Blonde (Hobart, 1934). Mind you, in this film Edward Arnold also does similar duty.

this guy is one of the best character actors, and with an absolutely interesting career arc. his earliest major role is maybe his most famous, and he's playing this smarmy, almost comic-relief sleazeball reporter, and now he's just morphed into this imposing dude with a lot of gravitas in roles like Avatar, Public Enemies, Don't Breathe, etc. also he's in the sort of condition i hope to be in around 70.

omar little, Tuesday, 18 March 2025 17:57 (three months ago)

I saw this old guy shuffling down the street the other day--I mean, old-old; I'm 63--and he immediately reminded me of stellar character-actor Phil Leeds (Rosemary's Baby, The Larry Sanders Show, The Odd Couple TV series, The Dick Van Dyke Show).
