Here's the trailer for Crispin Hellion Glover's long-awaited epic.

I believe it will have its debut at this month's Sundance Film Fest. This looks like a must see.

I wonder if Crispin Glover is really this strange, or if he just plays up his persona at all times.

His dad is Mr Wint from Diamonds are Forever, which is pretty cool.

Voice calls it an "atrocity":

That was a pretty weak review, though. It seemed like the critic had some pretty strong pre-conceived notions about that style of filmmaking before even stepping into the theater (hence the naively conclusive definition of Gummo as "maudit").

That said, I still have my doubts about the film, but it still looks more interesting than anything that's come out of Hollywood in quite a while.

Seems pretty positive to me.

It was positive at the end, but almost in that "I'm afraid to say I hate this film because I might be missing something and it might be brilliant, so I'll just criticize it in a open-ended way" way.

In other words, other than this single line--

His film is an atrocity, but honestly, who would have it any other way?

--I didn't really hear anything positive in that review.

I prefer that movies like this one are reviewed in a manner that says "this is what is in the film and if you like that, then you will love this or will at least want to see it, else, this caveat." I think it tends to nip a lot of the petty controversy in the bud, perhaps to the chagrin of the film crew and the film's distributor.

Still, I think it allows the film to be presented in a context of awareness that allows one to focus on the film and what it is trying to do, without being shocked by its content. That said, a great review for this type of film would involve an examination of the film's place in the context of the history of film and its success in expressing SOMETHING-WHATEVER-THAT-MAY-BE, but you can't really get a good grasp of that until much after the fact.

I agree. This topic kind of reminds me of ryan's (i think it was ryan) point about critics expressing their biases beforehand when approaching a film review.

My ideal situation--have only filmmakers do movie reviews. I would much prefer to have this film (or any other film for that matter) analyzed by a collegue instead of a critic.
