I haven't gotten this excited over a newly discovered genius since I first encountered Godard. What's the word on the street?

Anthony (Anthony F), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 06:47 (twenty years ago)

I just saw Dr. Akagi and it was a very odd film, so unique that i still dont quite know what to do with it. it was good though.

what films have you seen?

ryan (ryan), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 07:46 (twenty years ago)

Search! - Vengeance is Mine

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

Classics: Pigs and Battleships, The Pornographers

Damn Good: The Eel, Dr Akagi, Warm Water Under a Red Bridge (surreally funny stuff), his segment of the September 11 anthology

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

Those are classics alright, Dr. M! Also Search The Profound Desire of the Gods.

Imamura is genius, if sometimes a little wayward and maddening and hard to take if you aren't in the mood for him. But then again, that could apply to many great directors.

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

The best thing about Shohei Imamura is that you can re-arrange the letters of his name to spell "Hi, I'm A Rum Shoe".

But you still have an "A" left over.

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Thursday, 13 January 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

are you high jay?

ryan (ryan), Thursday, 13 January 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

Not necessarily.

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 13 January 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

No, Ryan, just overworked.....

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Thursday, 13 January 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

four weeks pass...
There is only Ballad of Narayama.

(actually I liked large chunks of Black Rain too, but nothing nothing NOTHING tops the sex-in-forest/decomposing-animals tomfoolery or the last half-hour. And I ended up getting pretty interested in his 11'9"01 short. Outside of that, I can pretty much take or leave his movies - I always feel like I can tell what's effective in his movies and how the effect plays out, but it never gets past the intellectual recognition stage. Even marijuana doesn't help.)

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Saturday, 12 February 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

I don't remember much about his 9/11 short except to say that it looked kinda cheesy. But refresh me on the story, b/c all I remember is badly-lit obvious sets and melodramatic stuff of a vague sort...

Didn't he do Tokyo Olympiad?

Girolamo Savonarola, Sunday, 13 February 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

eight months pass...
Vengeance is Mine is playing at Lincoln Ctr in 2 hours; I'll prolly go. No DVD on the horizon, is there?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 14 October 2005 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

I dunno. But yeah, you should definitely go.

What do Vengeance Is Mine and The Big Lebowski have in common?

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 14 October 2005 20:45 (nineteen years ago)

Were one of the actresses imitating Kate Hepburn?

Vengeance Is Mine was substantial, and I'm not even sure I'm getting S.I.'s injections of morbid slapstick into the grim proceedings entirely; cultural? plenty of that in The Pornographers, Pigs & Battleships, The Eel too... the 'inn' madam's scene with her syndicate lover's feet in closeup esp. I did like that Ken Ogata was making funny faces and otherwise acting like a resourceful crazy man unlike the 'cool' killers so beloved by US filmmakers.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 15 October 2005 14:39 (nineteen years ago)

I think you're thinking of The Hudsucker Proxy.

Good point about the way my namesake played crazy in that movie. I've liked him a lot in the films of that other Japanese director that nobody ever heard of until a few years ago- I still can't remember his name, but he directed "The Woman With Red Hair." There was one movie about a guy who wanted to divorce his dying wife to marry a young girl called "Love Letter" and another about a crazy poet who keeps getting involved in suicide pacts but failing to kill himself with a Latin/Italian title like "Enamorata."

k/l (Ken L), Saturday, 15 October 2005 23:08 (nineteen years ago)

Hah. Ken Ogata is not in those movies it is another Ken, but the woman (Mitsuko Baisho?) from Vengeance is Mine plays the wife in Love Letter. Kumashiro is the director.

and Intentions of Murder... bleaker than bleak. (great SCTV-style traffic fatality, tho)

Dr Morbius, Friday, 23 March 2007 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

his Black Rain drags a bit. Dr. Akagi a much more successful (tho different and nuttier) take on Hiroshima-related themes.

oscar, Sunday, 29 April 2007 00:31 (eighteen years ago)

I had a prof who loved to call him "the Osama bin Laden of filmmaking". What the hell that means, I have no idea. But I did just watch Warm Water Under a Red Bridge and yeah, I'm curious to continue traipsing thru the filmography.

PS - It's good to be back.

Girolamo Savonarola, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 09:46 (eighteen years ago)

hi GS -- what can we do to resurrect ILF?

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 18:24 (eighteen years ago)

Stop posting the film stuff on ILE.
I would love to see ILF stand on its own, but if you want a decent amount of responses seems like like you have to post the topic on ILE.

seven years pass...

def struck me as right to scrap the end color scene of 'black rain'

didnt know that miike worked with him, couldnt tell exactly if it was like a tongue in cheek, overworked admiration or whether miike was actually unhappy working as second ad on black rain......either way, he did say he learned a lot
