Betty Blue, revisited

Just watched the 3 hour director's cut last night. I saw the movie when it was released in the theater back in 86.

What I want to know is, was the ending changed? I seem to remember the original release had Zorg writing back at hut on the beach, and they were all painted blue. Am I delusional?

Also, the movie is not as good as I remembered it to be, but 19 years has a way of making your perceptions and tastes change. Watching it last night, I was not very impressed, although the cinematography at times was quite beautiful.
