I haven't seen Fassbinder's "The American Soldier" since high school, but the high-contrast images of fat men under overhead lights & the "ballet of death" finale still stick in my mind. I have to watch it again soon.

I haven't seen either of the Wajda films mentioned, but they're on my list. I'm looking forward to the Wajda Criterion set.

1692. The Fearless Vampire Killers, 1967 (dir. Roman Polanski)

I have only seen it once and remember thinking that its absolutely alien sense of pacing turned what was obviously a comedy (a proto-Mel Brooksian type deal) back towards the realm of unease and almost horror. The gay vampire was a nice touch.
