Dystopian/Post-Apocalyptic Movies

I'm trying to build a comprehensive list of both Dystopian/Post-Apocalyptic (either one or both together) books and movies, because this is without question my favorite genre. Can you give me some recommendations?

Post apocalyptic :
Mad Max Trilogy
A Boy And His Dog
La Dernier Combat
Waterworld
The Postman
Cyborg
Day Of the Jugger
On The Beach
The Quiet Earth
Omega Man
Time Of The Wolf

Day of the Dead and, to a lesser extent, Dawn of the Dead and 28 Days Later. Perhaps the miniseries of "The Stand".

La Jetée

Ken L (Ken L), Saturday, 16 April 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

Delicatessen.
12 Monkeys (La Jetee kind of points that out)
Is Solarbabies post apoc?
Larry Clark's Teenage Caveman
Sacafice is kind of a pre-apoc film.
so its close.

hope this is some help.

A.I. is one of, if not the, best.

ryan (ryan), Saturday, 16 April 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

yay Teenage Caveman!

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Saturday, 16 April 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

Tsai Ming-Liang's "The Hole".

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Sunday, 17 April 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

1984
Bladerunner
The Alien Series (Alien Resurrection especially dystopian IMO)
Escape From New York
Logan's Run
Stalker
Planet of The Apes
Day of The Triffids

Bill A (Bill A), Monday, 18 April 2005 11:48 (twenty years ago)

Metropolis
Things to Come
Soylent Green
Miracle Mile

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 18 April 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

I've always loved Miracle Mile. The scene in the film when Anthony Edwards is pushing a sleeping Mare Winningham in a shopping cart at top speed through the empty L.A. streets as night approaches dawn is short but memorable. But also memorable is the entire film's loopy energy and its pessimistic romantic urgency.

herber hebert (herbert hebert), Monday, 18 April 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

Night of the Comet

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

Café Flesh
Cherry 2000

Chris F. (servoret), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

The Handmaid's Tale

Oh, and how did I forget... Robot Monster!

Chris F. (servoret), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

Gattica
Akira
Fist Of The North Star
Barb Wire

Philip Alderman (Phil A), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 09:10 (twenty years ago)

It looks like someone's already formed an online list of dystopias.

Death Race 2000
The Running Man
Deathrow Gameshow
Angel's Egg
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

Chris F. (servoret), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

Brazil, of course.
The Bed-Sitting Room, which I keep intending to see again after many years.

Max N. (maxn), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

Some fantastic recommendations here. A few I have seen, and many I have never even heard of. I have a question about 28 Days Later, though. I am interested in watching this movie, because of the post-apoc nature, but I have heard that it is also really scary. I can't stomach really scary movies. I just get completely freaked out (usually after the fact). Is this really that scary?

Caenis (Caenis), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

It has a number of "jump" moments here and there, but I wouldn't consider it to be particularly terrifying overall. And the handful of moments are fairly well-telegraphed.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

Ahh, I've thought of another one: Eraserhead! It's not explicitely stated, but there's definitely a post-disaster vibe going on. Mary's dad's dialogue early on in the film supports this: "I've watched this neighborhood change from pastures to the hell-hole it is now!" Perhaps Henry's hideously deformed offspring is a result of radioactive fallout? I'm just sayin'.

Another vaguely interesting point to consider is that there are no vehicles in the entire film(with the exception of the train noises heard on the soundtrack, assuming they are supposed to be trains).

The Road? I really liked the novel and I thought the film did about as good a job as could be done. Nobody talks about it or says anything other than "that was depressing" so I feel like I'm in the minority here.

I encoded this and have watched it over 130 times now (estimat).

Zette Sullivan. I cannot remember what happens during the movie, but the last scene looks like the last scene of the matrix 4. the rest of the movie is like a totally memorable blur. i am schizophrenic btw. there is aphoto of helen hunt on the fridge in the second scene, when jack death wakes up in his daughter's body as jo death. neat. helen hunt was in the earlier trancers series. she was also the star of grace under fire lol.

um, if anypone likes dystopian horror, in the context of the trancers series. maybe i can post more on this topic

Silent Running may be pretty much a one-man show but the fact that they are trying to preserve the world's environments in that way would suggest something bad had happened on earth. Not seen it in a while so not sure if taht is in fact directly stated.

anyone recommend Ray Milland's Panic in Year Zero?

Miracle Mile just out on Bluray.

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 20 August 2015 00:13 (ten years ago)

I'd only recommend it if you want to appreciate it for schlocky absurdity and patriotic Americans solving things by punching a lot. I sort of enjoyed it but really didn't think it was in any way a good film.

"Songs from the Second Floor" and Don Hertzfeldt's "World of Tomorrow", both dystopian/pre-apocalyptic.
