Huge Borders sale

I don't know if it's nationwide, but if you've got a Borders near you you might want to take a look- some of them are downsizing their multimedia sections and selling a lot of their inventory for 40% off. I walked away with three Criterion DVDs (Band of Outsiders, Breathless, and Mishima), Don't Look Now, a volume of 42nd Street Forever and the last Stereolab album for (comparatively) dirt cheap yesterday.

OK, not only have I gotten confirmation that it is nationwide, with all Borders stores participating, they're now down to 50% off stickered DVDs and 50% off all CDs. At the store I visited it seemed like about 80% of their Criterion titles were marked down, and I ended up getting M, La Strada, Les Enfants Terribles, and The Lady Vanishes for a song (not to mention finally buying Sandinista).

yeah, I picked up the dawn of the dead boxset for $20 a couple weeks ago

was in there this week and things had been pretty picked over, only thing that tempted me was the criterion vengeance is mine for $15, but I passed

maybe I'll wait till they hit 75%

Why are they doing this? People aren't into DVDs anymore?

They are just going to sell new releases and best-selling catalog titles now for both plain DVD and CDs.

the move makes sense. a combo of illegal dl'ing + the poor economy have consumers cutting back spending on cds + dvds. plus every dvd + cd that sits on their shelf represents capital $$ locked up on their balance sheet. the name of the game in retail is inventory turn. this also is an opportunity to focus on their c

it sucks, cause even though they were overpriced, they had a decent selection of foreign/weird movies and offbeat music, I could always rely on them in a pinch for last minute presents and impulse buys.

at least they're doing what they need to do to survive in this economy instead of trundling dutifully into the grave. unfortunately this probably hurts some small + independent dvd distributors.
