TS: allmovieguide vs imdb

which do you prefer? imdb is better for it's popularity and user ratings, and message boards, but I like allmovieguide for the stars given along side the movies. This tells me what to look for easily. If imdb provided this feature it would be much better. Also Allmovieguide as a good list of experimental and avant gard movies, and imdb doesn't. But I check imdb much more often.

or are there anyother databases that compete?

I usually look stuff up on www.rottentomatoes.com first, that gives me the main info - stars, director, year, and maybe a couple of reviews.

I'll also look up recent ('86-) movies in the Ebert review database. I don't agree with him all that often, but he is comprehensive.

i find myself using allmovie first because i like the interface better, and then if i need more detailed information i'll usually hit up imdb.

Yeah, no comparison.

I don't find a raison d'etre for allmovie, since it really isn't in the review-biz -- and if it's just offering synopses and cast/crew info, it's going to be difficult to compete with IMDB.

However, does All Movie get its cast/crew info straight from the studios/producers?

The gossip on IMDB is pretty ridiculous but of course i only know this because I read it daily.

The IMDB is incredibly thorough, and the amount of improvement since their first incarnation is astounding. They must have contacts at film archives everywhere, as well as an amazing array of reference books and so forth, because they seem to have near-complete filmographies--including lost films--of early figures like Urban Gad and Louis Feuillade (who made more than 800 films). Every so often I find something missing; they're poor on experimental cinema, but it's no wonder since notions of release dates and completed titles are a little sketchy when it comes to people like Ken Jacobs and Stan Brakhage. The Allmovie Guide is pretty worthless, especially as they seem to assign star ratings at random to unreviewed films (even to unreviewed lost films which is patently absurd).

yes; it sucks. you can get to the old version, for now, by some accidental process (click 'combined details' or something)
