film ID - italian (?) film, possibly from the '50s or '60s

at my school's library you're not allowed to take videos out but rather you have to watch them at the library at viewing stations. the thing is, each carrel is set up so that it's pretty easy to see what your neighbor's watching, and i'm easily distracted so my eyes drift to what the person next to me is viewing pretty often.

anyway, someone next to me was watching a film that seemed to be an italian production (one of the intertitles i think was written in italian at least) from either the '50s or the '60s. the DVD cover was just out of my eyesight so i couldn't make out the title, but it's a black and white film and the only scene i really remember (and the reason my interest was piqued) is that there's a bunch of women on a mountain and one of them throws a bowling ball at a man in order to slow him down (they're trying to catch him for some reason). shortly before this scene, an older woman yells "FAGGOT!" (presumably at the man?) and squishes something in her hand. and also, one of the intertitles that follows this scene says something along the lines of "The Solitary Man Is Always Accompanied"

anyway, this movie looked really interesting, and if anyone can give me a lead as to what it might be i'd be very grateful!
