I'm looking for the citation for an academic essay that argued that film was inherently conservative medium because of its emphasis on the solitary protagonist. This supposedly fascist romanticization forces film narrative to ignore the concerns of groups or broader contextual issues outside of one man's solutions, like class disparity or racism. I think the essay focused primarily on film noir (a genre whose protagonists usually find it acceptable to violate the law). I'm writing a paper on legal representations in film and am trying to find the citation. I thought it was in the Wilson Quarterly, but I can't find it. If any of you know where it is, please backchannel to kenneth.chen[at]yale.edu.
Thanks,Ken
