Yeah, Jaws is an absolute masterpiece. And the rip-offs aren't bad, either:

Every year I have my students design movie posters as an art exercise, so I'm partial to this thread. I have a bit of a hard time separating the poster from the film: the posters I like best are for films I also like, and if there are great posters out there for lousy movies (as I'm sure there are), I'm pretty sure I'd like the poster less because of it.

It's hard to find a bad poster from before 1970, they all look like more thought and effort was put into their design. Modern posters look terrible in comparison.

I love the posters of the '70s--I don't think the art started to go out of it till the '80s. If you look closely at the Nashville poster, you'll see that Judith Crist and Vincent Canby are quoted by name, but Kael, from what must be one of the two most famous movie reviews of the '70s (along with her own Last Tango review), disappears behind the New Yorker attribution.

Aaaarghhh...clever people. If you're interested, I was trying to post images for The Paper Chase (http://www.impawards.com/1973/posters/paper_chase.jpg), The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz (http://www.impawards.com/1974/posters/apprenticeship_of_duddy_kravitz_ver2.jpg), and Save the Tiger (http://www.impawards.com/1973/posters/save_the_tiger.jpg).

Non-chintzy posters for non-chintzy horror movies can be great too:

Hah, that says 11" by 17" though, I would imagine it's more of a small promo at that size.

mike h. (mike h.), Saturday, 28 January 2006 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, it's probably one of those collector's edition lobby cards.
