Audiard remake of Toback's "Fingers." Can anyone vouch for this? Is it any good? As good as/better than the original? Best thing since sliced French bread? It's highly unlikely I'll get a chance to see this in a theater, so I'm quite willing to subsist on the received opinions of you lucky citydwelling bastards.

A decent little noir, which is well-crafted enough to override the protagonist's implausibility (I anticipated a few plot turns and lines of dialogue too).

I've never seen "Fingers" as I generally can't stand Toback's more recent films; I'll give it a shot soon.

TS James Toback vs. Henry Jaglom: Who Is More Insufferable?

Thanks, Dr. Morbius.

Yeah. Toback is almost a different guy now. (There's a short, recent interview with Keitel and Toback on the "Fingers" DVD. Keitel is fine; Toback is fairly embarrassing.)

As I understand, in the remake the mother is dead and the father is much more egregiously unsympathetic. I'm guessing this may justify the changed ending, the idea of which bugged me when I first heard about it. The unlikeliness of the protagonists is the two films' defining, shared conceit, I guess.

One of the finest films, and easily the finest performance, of the year so far.

It's okay. Pacing-wise it's very off: it's almost 50 minutes into the movie that it really starts, but it picks up from there and makes itself pretty good. Some great comic moments, excellent performances, and one of those gratuitous heavy-breathing grope scenes the French love so much. I haven't seen Fingers, though.
