so i am doing this big paper for a class, its my final, and it has to be mega in depth and such. i can handle that. my big topic is that of the red dress in film. the red dress is a big lust factor that i blah blah blah all comes from the scarlett letter and such. but i can only think of three instances where the red dress is symbolic of fits in with my concept.

porgy and bess (1959) the red dress she wears and her being a siren and such
jezebel (1938) red dress to the ball jezebel and such
gone with the wind (1939) red dress to ashley's party

any other examples would be greatly appreciated.

Uh, does it? Nathaniel Hawthorne invented "red dress = sexed up"?

he branded the color red as a symbol of lust. the scarlett letter has morphed in literature, the arts, and film to symbolize sex. it was his novel idea.

Now I haven't broken out my copy of "Primary Colors" yet, but this seems fabulously unlikely. I did google up a few essays and whatnot about the red dress in The Scarlet Letter and none of them mentioned that this was the first time that "red" had been a symbol of "lust". Since red is the color that many people turn when they are flush with sexual excitement, you'd think someone would have noticed this before the mid-19th C., but if not, then Hawthorne is more brilliant than I gave him credit for.
