Recommend Me a Film

Hey ILF. I have a question. Lately I have been obsessed with Jean Genet's Funeral Rites and Leonard Cohen's "The Partisan," both artworks focusing on the French resistance to the Nazis. I really want to see a film dealing with this or a similar topic, whether it be in a literal way like Battle of Algiers or a more metaphorical way. It doesn't even neccessarily have to be about the Nazi occupation of Paris. This is kinda specific and broad at the same time, I know, but I'm convinced there must be several films out there that fit this bill. Thanks in advance for yr help!

It seems like Jules Et Jim might be the kind of thing I'm looking for...

i'd recommend au revoir enfants, though it's not out (quite) yet on DVD.

or, a more comic spin on life under occupation: to be or not to be. closely watched trains also comes to mind (though neither of these take place in france; both are in eastern europe).

This column should be helpful:

I saw "Le Corbeau" on DVD recently, highly recommended (as the Occupation content is purely metaphorical, like The Crucible w/ the Red Scare). The Tavernier film set in the French movie industry of the era is called "Safe Conduct" in English, long but pretty good.

"The Sorrow and the Pity" is the definitive documentary, but also an artwork.

recommend me a film (or films) set largely on a train. can't be hitchcock cuz i've seen it, otherwise we should be golden. i cannot get trains out of my mind and my appetite must be fed. no i don't have a model train set, or any 'sounds of the rail' records, or any train memorabilia or literature at all, in fact, in my house. i just like trains, that's it, leave it alone. thanks.

The French Connection was Billy Friedkin BTW. Frankenheimer did the sequel.

train films: it's sort of related to strangers via the highsmith connection, but wenders' the american friend has some good train scenes.

Re: Revisionalist Westerns--The Wild Rovers is supposed to be pretty good. (haven't seen it myself)

Marxism Goes Better With Coke (Charles McCain), Thursday, 20 October 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

Wild Rovers is pretty good for Blake Edwards.

Fassbinder's "Whity" is like a deadpan Blazing Saddles / Mandingo (predating both!) in German.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 21 October 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

cool, thanks for both

holy shit, i had no idea that malkovich straight-to-video was a remake!

Shanghai Express is a classic, all on trains (or in train stations).

Or Runaway Train.

Jeff LeVine (Jeff LeVine), Friday, 21 October 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

it predates the revisionist era, but The Ox-Bow Incident is pretty great and a big departure from the Westerns of its era.

Grand Prix is a great Frankenheimer movie if you love cars/racing.
